Home Runs Lift Norwich over Falcons 9-6

The Albertus Magnus softball team fell to Norwich 9-6 in game two on Saturday afternoon in West Haven. Albertus led 5-3 after four innings but a five-run fifth inning for the Cadets gave Norwich an 8-5 lead late in the game. With the win, Norwich extends its win streak to 15 games, while the Cadets are now 10-0 in league play.

Albertus (10-14, 3-9 GNAC) took a 2-1 lead in the second inning when back-to-back Falcons registered RBI doubles.  Veronica Hribko (East Haven, Conn.) plated Krista LaBissoniere (Meriden, Conn.) with her double as LaBissoniere pinch ran for Aimee Mirto (Hamden, Conn.), who singled to lead off the inning.  Freshman Isabel Lopez (West Haven, Conn.) followed with her double as Hribko scored the go-ahead run.

Norwich scored two runs in the following inning when Abby Belcher homered.  Belcher was one of three Cadets to hit a home run in the contest.  In the bottom of the frame, Albertus scored three runs on five hits to take a 5-3 advantage. Back-to-back singles and a passed ball put two runners into scoring position before Mirto and Hribko recorded RBI singles. Jackie Medina (Bridgeport, Conn.) also picked up an RBI single later in the inning.

Norwich struck in the fifth inning with five runs led by a Corinne Baita home run.  With the bases loaded and two outs, Briana Day reached base on an error by an Albertus outfielder, which allowed the bases to clear to give Norwich an 8-5 lead.

Albertus scored its sixth run in the bottom of the fifth on an RBI single from Lopez. Norwich added its final run of the contest in the top of the seventh as Day hit the Cadets' third home run of the game. Day finished the game with one hit and four RBI.

Hribko finished the night 2-for-4 with two RBI for the Falcons, while Lopez added a 2-for-2 performance with two RBI.  Jamie Vesciglio (Stratford, Conn.) added two hits and two runs scored.

Medina took the loss as she gave up 10 hits in seven innings of work.  She also struck out seven batters.

Albertus will return to action on Wednesday, April 10 at Anna Maria.  Game one of the GNAC doubleheader is scheduled for 3:30 p.m.
