North Myrtle Beach, S.C. – The Albertus Magnus College softball team split a doubleheader against Principia and Wisconsin-Stout on Tuesday at the NMB Park and Sports Complex Field No. 1 in the Fastpitch Dreams Spring Classic. The Falcons cruised past the Panthers, 8-0, in five innings before falling to the Blue Devils, 6-1, to end the day.

Albertus Magnus moves to 3-1 on the year with the split and the squad is off to their best start since beginning the season 3-0 in 2013.

In the opener, sophomore pitcher Megan Ferraro (Branford, Conn.) tossed a complete game shutout to earn her second win of the spring. In the circle, Ferraro scattered five hits and struck out six batters to lower her earned run average to 0.58.

Albertus plated runs in each of the game's five innings to score its first mercy rule triumph of the season. The Falcons pounced on Principia early in game one, taking advantage of a Panther miscue to score three runs in the home half of the first. During the frame, sophomore Melissa Castillo (Taftville, Conn.) hit a sac fly to right, while both Kirsten McGinty (East Lyme, Conn.) and Daysia Wehder (Queens, N.Y.) delivered RBI singles.

During the contest AMC took advantage of the Principia errors, scoring two runs on wild pitches. Also in the tilt, junior Amanda Jessey (East Haven, Conn.) added a run-scoring single.

In the finale, Wisconsin-Stout scored two runs in the first and took advantage of a Falcon error to plate four more runs in the third. The Blue Devils opened the scoring with back-to-back run-producing hits from center fielder Rachel Thomas and Beth Wood.

Albertus Magnus got on the board in the top of the sixth as senior left fielder Alyssa Puccilli (Milford, Conn.) hit an RBI double to right center that brought Jessey racing home.

In the circle, AMC starter Brianna Whitfield (West Islip, N.Y.) was saddled with the loss after tossing two and two thirds innings.

Albertus Magnus returns to action on Wednesday, March 16, with a single game against Rutgers-Camden at 1:30 pm. The Falcons will be looking for their second straight win versus the Scarlett Raptors after topping Rutgers-Camden, 3-2, in the season opener.
