Softball Ends Spring Break Trip with Three Wins on St. Patrick's Day

North Myrtle Beach, S.C. – The Albertus Magnus College softball team ended its 2016 spring break trip in the Palmetto State with three wins on Thursday afternoon at the NMB Sports Complex in the Fastpitch Dreams Spring Classic. The Falcons bounced back from two straight losses with wins against Keystone, Southern Vermont and Bay Path. AMC has won three games in a row for the second time already this spring and returns home with a 6-2 overall record.

In the opener, Albertus Magnus jumped out to an early 7-0 lead and held off a late Keystone rally to earn an 8-5 triumph. In the circle, Falcon sophomore Samantha Maselli (Rockville Centre, N.Y.) went five and one third innings to earn her first win of the season. Freshman righty Kristen Cunning (Hoboken, N.J.) recorded the last five outs for AMC.

Albertus Magnus plated three runs in the first against Keystone as sophomore Gillian Fortier (Naugatuck, Conn.) laced an RBI single to right, classmate Melissa Castillo (Taftville, Conn.) knocked a sac fly to center and senior Alyssa Puccilli (Milford, Conn.) lined a run-scoring double. The Falcons added four insurance runs in the top of the fourth, highlighted by sophomores Brianna Whitfield (West Islip, N.Y.) and Daysia Wehder (Queens, N.Y.) hitting RBI singles.

Keystone threatened in the sixth, scoring four runs. With a runner on third and the tying run at the dish, Cunning induced a pop out and ground out to get out of the jam.

The Falcons cruised past Southern Vermont, 14-0, in five innings in game two. The triumph was the second by mercy rule for Albertus Magnus during its South Carolina trip. Cunning was stellar in the circle for AMC, tossing a one-hit shutout to record her second career complete game.

Offensively, junior Rachel Cataudella (Shelton, Conn.) paced the Falcon attack going 2-for-3 with two runs scored and one RBI. Fortier continued her strong play, recording a hit and a game-high two RBIs.

In the finale, Albertus Magnus erased a late two-run deficit to register a 9-6 win versus Bay Path. The Falcons erupted for seven runs in the top of the sixth to reclaim the lead for good. During the stanza, Puccilli hit an inside the park two-run homer to right field. She tied the contest at four as she sent a fly ball over the Wildcat right fielder's head. Whitfield, Cataudella and Castillo all added RBI singles in the frame as well.

Sophomore pitcher Megan Ferraro (Branford, Conn.) went the distance for the Falcons in the circle, striking out three to earn her third win of the season.

Albertus Magnus returns to action on Thursday, March 24, with a road non-conference clash against in-state rival Coast Guard that gets underway at 3:00 pm.
