New Haven, Conn. – The Albertus Magnus College softball team dropped both ends of a Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) doubleader versus Johnson & Wales on Wednesday afternoon at Celentano Field. The Wildcats took the opener, 13-1, and scored a 6-2 triumph in the finale.

After the sweep, the Falcons enter the weekend riding a three-game losing streak and sit at 14-6 overall and 5-3 in conferince play. In a rematch of the last spring's GNAC Championship game, the Wildcats erupted for 19 runs in two victories to improve to 16-5 on the spring and 4-2 in league contests.

Game One
JWU jumped on AMC starter Kristen Cunning (Hoboken, N.J.) early, plating four runs in the first two innings. The Wildcats would later put the game away with seven runs in the top of the seventh inning.

Offensively, sopohmore shortstop Brianna Whitfield (West Islip, N.Y.) accounted for two of the team's four hits, while classmate Gillian Fortier (Naugatuck, Conn.) went 1-for-2 with a pair of walks. The Falcons pushed across their lone run of the tilt in the botom of the third as Melissa Castillo (Taftville, Conn.) walked with the bases loaded.

AMC threatened in third inning, loading the bases with one out thanks to an error and two singles. After surrendering a walk to Castillo, Johnson & Wales pitcher Jennifer Corona got out of the jam. She got a Falcon to pop out on a bunt attempt and enduced a groundout to escape with a three-run lead.

The Wildcats would add an insurance run in both the fifth and sixth frames before hanging a seven spot on Falcon reliever Shayla Gladden (Springfield, Mass.) in their last at-bat.

Game Two
Once again, JWU was opportunistic early. The guests plated four of their six runs in the first inning. In the top of the first, the Wildcats smacked six hits, highlighted by an inside-the-park three-run home run to left center by designated player Emily Scaper.

Albertus Magnus starter Megan Ferraro (Branford, Conn.) would settle down after the first and hold the guests scoreless until the sixth inning. She allowed one run in the sixth courtesy of an RBI single from Wildcat catcher Kristen Solari and was saddled with her second loss of the spring. JWU would go on to add an insurance run in the seventh as Diana Amendolara homered to centerfield.

Albertus Magnus scored both of their runs in the fifth as Fortier lined a ground-rul double to right center that brought Whitfield and junior Megan Kelly (Bronx, N.Y.) racing home.

Albertus Magnus returns to action on Saturday, April 16, with a road GNAC doubleheader versus Norwich that gets underway at noon. The Falcons swept the Cadets last spring in a pair of games played at Purchase College.
