Softball Extends Winning Streak to Six, Sweeps Purchase in Non-Conference Doubleheader

New Haven, Conn. – The Albertus Magnus College softball team swept Purchase College in a non-conference doubleheader on Wednesday afternoon at Celentano Field. The Falcons took game one, 6-5, after scoring the game-winning run in the bottom of the sixth, and wrapped up the afternoon with a 10-2 win in the night cap.

HOW IT HAPPENED

(T) 1st Inning  – Purchase College opened the game with the early 1-0 advantage following a RBI sacrifice fly from Kelly Hayes.

(B) 1st Inning – Albertus Magnus answered back scoring a run in the bottom of the inning as Laura Anderson picked up the RBI single allowing Gillian Fortier (Naugatuck, Conn.) to score. The Falcons' threat continued as bases were loaded with two outs, but Brianna Whitfield (West Islip, N.Y.) ended the threat with a strikeout.

(T) 2nd Inning – The Panthers added two more runs to their total in the top of the second to push their lead to two, 3-1.

(B) 2nd Inning – However, Albertus Magnus would go on to score four runs on four hits thanks to an RBI from Fortier, Anderson, Melissa Castillo (Taftville, Conn.) and Whitfield.

(T) 3rd Inning – Purchase continued to swing the bat and tied the game at 5-5 following a two-run inning. With two outs and runners on second and first, Mary Adams and Antonina Fiore hit back-to-back RBI before the final out was collected.

 (B) 6th Inning – Daysia Wehder (Queens, N.Y.) sealed the win for the Falcons as the catcher recorded her third home-run of the season.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE

  • Fortier led the Falcons at the plate with a 3-of-4 showing as well as collected two runs and a RBI.
  • Anderson recorded a team-high two RBI as well as registered a run scored.
  • As a team, Albertus Magnus went 12-for-28 at the plate as well as recorded six RBI.
  • Purchase went 9-of-30 at the plate as well as posted nine strike outs.
  • Two different players from Sarah Lawrence registered two hits.

HOW IT HAPPENED

(B) 1st Inning – Whitfield gave the Falcons the early 1-0 lead after scoring on a passed ball by the Panthers' pitcher.

(T) 4th Inning – Purchase finally broke the silence in the top of the fourth as the visitors scored two runs on three hits to take a 2-1 lead over the Falcons.

(B) 5th Inning – Bats came alive for the Falcons in the bottom of the fifth as the hosts scored nine runs on eight hits to finish the game 10-2. Fortier began the rally with a single before Castillo loaded the bases following a walk. Wehder and Marissa Guglielmi (Branford, Conn.) each drove in a runner before Rachel Cataudella (Shelton, Conn.) tallied the first out. Aliza Esposito (East Haven, Conn.) continued the rally with a three-run RBI before she scored on a passed ball. Still one out and runners on second and third, Fortier cleared the bases, but Whitfield collected the Falcons second out of the inning. Albertus managed to load the bases again before Guglielmi drove in the final run of the game.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE

  • Four different players registered at least two hits in the Falcons win.
  • Albertus Magnus finished the game 12-of-26 at the plate while the Panthers went 3-of-18.
  • Esposito led the Falcons with a team-high three RBI while Fortier and Whitfield collected two runs apiece.
