Fortier Sets New Season-High in Home Runs, Softball Takes Two from Mount Ida in GNAC Play

New Haven, Conn. - Junior Gillian Fortier (Naugatuck, Conn.) of the Albertus Magnus College softball team set a new season-high in home-runs with six as the Falcons swept Mount Ida College in a Great Northeast Athletic Conference doubleheader at Celentano Field on Saturday afternoon. The Falcons took game one, 12-4, in six innings and shut out the Mustangs, 8-0, in the night cap.

HOW IT HAPPENED

(B) 1st INNING - Gillian Fortier (Naugatuck, Conn.) started off the game hot with a home run over the center field fence. The Falcons continued the rally with runners on second and third with one out before Daysia Wehder (Bronx, N.Y.) singled to allow the second run to score 2-0.

(B) 2nd INNING - The Falcons carry their momentum into the second as Laura Anderson (East Haven, Conn.) allowed Fortier to score to give the Falcons a 3-0 cushion.

(T) 3rd INNING - However, Mount Ida would rally back to tie the game at 3-3 following a three-run, one-hit inning.

(B) 3rd INNING - It wasn't long as the Falcons responded back with three runs in the bottom of the third to double their lead, 6-3. With one out, Wehder would cross home first following a RBI single from Aliza Esposito (East Haven, Conn.) before Maxine Sanchez (Corona, N.Y.) cleared the bases with a RBI double. With two outs and bases loaded, Anderson is walked by the Mustangs' bullpen and forced to send Sanchez home.

(B) 4th INNING - Albertus Magnus continued to swing the bat and pushed its lead to 10-3, following a four run inning. The Falcons were led in the fourth by Fortier who drove in two runs off a double to left field.

(T) 5th INNING - The Mustangs would tally a run, 10-4, in the top of the fifth off a sacrifice fly to center field from Medici.

(B) 6th INNING - Whitfield would seal the deal for the Falcons as she ended the game with a two-run RBI double to mercy the Mustangs, 12-4 in the opener.

INSIDE THE STATS

  • Fortier also had a great first game with four runs scored, two hits and three RBI.
  • Brianna Whitfield (West Islip, N.Y.) recorded an impressive 3-of-4 showing at the plate as well as added three RBI and a run scored.
  • Mount Ida finished the day 3-of-21 at the plate.
  • Ferraro improves to 11-2 on the mound following today's win.

HOW IT HAPPENED

(B) 1st INNING - Similar to game one, Albertus Magnus took the early 1-0 advantage this time from Whitfield as she flied out to left field, allowing Fortier to cross home.

(B) 3rd INNING - This time Fortier would fly out to left field giving Megan Kelly (Bronx, N.Y.) the opportunity to score after reaching on base with a single.

(B) 5th INNING - Up 2-0, Fortier extended the Falcons' lead to 4-0 after she hit her sixth home run of the season as well as drove in an extra run. Following that home run, Fortier has now hit 11 homers over her career at Albertus.

(B) 6th INNING - Albertus Magnus ended the game scoring four more runs in the bottom of the sixth to improve its winning streak to nine. Morgan Shura (Wallingford, Conn.) was the first runner to score before Sanchez sent Wehder home. Despite grounding out to second, Kelly was able to advance runner to third and home before Sanchez scored off a RBI single from Fortier.

INSIDE THE STATS

  • Fortier led the offensive attack with a 2-of-4 performance at the plate as well as added two runs scored a four RBI to her stat line.
  • Alisa Benson was the only player to register a hit for the Mustangs in game two.
  • Following today's win, Anderson improves to 8-2 on the mound.
  • Albertus Magnus finished with nine hits and seven RBI.
  • Kelly and Fortier recorded a team-high two runs scored while Fortier and Wedher registered two hits a piece in the win.
