Softball Suffers Doubleheader Sweep to Johnson & Wales

Providence, R.I. - The Albertus Magnus College softball team was swept by Johnson & Wales in a Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) doubleheader on Wednesday evening at the Scott Miracle-Gro Athletic Complex. The Wildcats won the opener, 8-6, then took the nightcap, 8-1.

HOW IT HAPPENED

(T) 1st Inning - Brianna Whitfield (West Islip, N.Y.) got things started for the Falcons scoring two runs to give the visitors the early 2-0 advantage. Gillian Fortier (Naugatuck, Conn.) led off the inning with a walk before Whitfield hit a deep ball over the left field fence for her first home run of the season.

(B) 1st Inning - A half inning later, the Wildcats cut the lead in half, 2-1, as Kristin Frost came home after a RBI single from Gorecki.

(B) 2nd Inning - Johnson and Wales struck again in the bottom of the second scoring three runs on three hits, including a three-run homer from Brenna DuPerry, to put the hosts up 4-2.

(B) 3rd Inning - Bats continued to swing for the Wildcats in the bottom of the third as the hosts tacked on another two runs to extend their lead to 6-2.

(T) 4th Inning - Melissa Castillo (Taftville, Conn.) started off the top of the fourth with her fifth home run of the season to cut the lead in half, 6-3. With one out, Rachel Cataudella (Shelton, Conn.) continued the rally, reaching first off an error by the center fielder, but would be left on base following two outs from Aliza Esposito (East Haven, Conn.) and Morgan Shura (Wallingford, Conn.). 

(B) 4th /5th Inning - Johnson and Wales answered back to Castillo's solo home run scoring back-to-back runs in the bottom of the fourth and fifth inning to take a commanding 8-3 lead.

(T) 7th Inning – Albertus Magnus rallied in the top of the seventh scoring three runs on six hits, but fell short 8-6. With two outs, Fortier started the rally with a double to right center before advancing home after a RBI single from Whitfield. Whitfield found herself on third following a double to Laura Anderson (East Haven, Conn.) and scored following a single from Castillo. Daysia Wehder (Queens, N.Y.) continued the Falcons' rally with a RBI single, sending Maxine Sanchez home before Cataudella loaded the bases with a single. However, a pop up to third ended the threat.

INSIDE THE STATS

  • Caitlin Kiene earned the save on the mound for the Wildcats.
  • Castillo led the Falcons with a 3-of-4 showing at the plate as well as tallied two RBI and a run scored.
  • Albertus Magnus and Johnson & Wales each tallied 12 hits each.
  • Four different players led the Wildcats offensively as each totaled two hits apiece.

HOW IT HAPPENED

(T) 1st Inning – Anderson got the Falcons on the board first after collecting her first home run of the season to give the visitors the 1-0 advantage.

(B) 1st Inning – DuPerry tied the game up 1-1 after she crossed home following a RBI single from Frost. 

(B) 2nd – 5th Inning – Over the next four innings, Johnson and Wales pushed the lead to seven, 8-1. The Wildcats took over the lead in the top of the second, 2-1, before finding themselves up 6-1 after scoring four runs in the bottom of the third. In the bottom of the fifth, Johnson & Wales tacked on two more insurance runs to put the game away. 

INSIDE THE STATS

  • Anderson recorded the Falcons' only run while Whitfield led the offensive attack with two hits.
  • Kristin Frost paced the Wildcats with a 3-of-4 performance at the plate as well as two runs scored and two RBI.
  • Albertus Magnus was held to only five hits while Johnson & Wales posted 12 on the evening.

The Falcons return to action on Saturday, April 22 at Simmons. The doubleheader is set for 2 p.m. and 4 p.m.
