Women's Swimming & Diving Opens 2022 with Home Meet vs. WNE

RESULTS

NEW HAVEN, Conn. - The Albertus Magnus College women's swimming & diving team hosted its first dual meet of 2022 on Saturday afternoon, falling to the visiting Golden Bears of Western New England University by a final score of 121-75 at the Cosgrove Marcus Messer Athletic Center Swimming Pool.

Prior to today's meet, the Falcons recognized senior Jesly Cortez (Norwalk, Conn.) as the lone graduating member of the 2021-22 team. Cortez was a three-year member of the team, including the inaugural swim team in 2019-20, and a member of the field hockey team.

"Coming off of winter training, I couldn't be more pleased with how the girls performed individually," said Head Coach Lauren Pallone. "We are excited for the GNAC Championships in two weeks at Wellesley."

TOP PERFORMERS IN EACH EVENT
200 Yard Medley Relay

1000 Yard Freestyle

  • Bender took the top spot in the event with a time of 13:15.42.
  • Estrada posted the third-quickest time with a mark of 13:25.91.
  • Accioly (13:47.77) tallied the fourth-fastest time of the event.

200 Yard Freestyle

  • Gordillo brought home three points with a time of 2:53.72.
  • Chisunta Chikwamu (Lusaka City, Zambia) finished fifth with a time of 3:34.09.

50 Yard Freestyle

  • Cortez posted a time of 39.06 to take fourth place.
  • Crisnelly Martinez-Tejeda (Stratford, Conn.) clocked a mark of 42.17 for fifth place.
  • Chikwamu (46.02) finished sixth overall.

100 Yard Individual Medley

  • Estrada topped the event with a time of 1:12.07 for nine points.
  • Arle Cruceta-Garcia (Salcedo, Dominican Republic) took home third place with a time of 1:53.30.

50 Yard Butterfly

  • Accioly picked up the win and nine points with a time of 31.22.

100 Yard Freestyle

  • Cortez recorded a time of 1:27.84 to take fourth place.
  • Chikwamu finished fifth with a mark of 1:38.82
  • Martinez-Tejeda rounded out the Falcons' competitors with a time of 1:47.06.

50 Yard Backstroke

  • Chloe Oliver (Milford, Conn.) finished third in the event with a mark of 37.33.

500 Yard Freestyle

  • Bender finished first overall with a time of 6:33.93
  • Gordillo finished fourth with a mark of 8:05.03

50 Breaststroke

  • Estrada gathered nine points for first place with a time of 36.65.
  • Accioly was the next finisher with a time of 39.20.

NOTEWORTHY
With her time in the 50 breaststroke, Estrada qualified for the New England Intercollegiate Swimming and Diving Association (NEISDA) Championships.
The Falcons also qualified to take a relay squad of four for the NEISDA's.

UP NEXT
The Falcons will next return to the pool on Friday, Feb. 4, for the first day of the Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) Championships, hosted at Chandler Pool on the campus of Wellesley College. Friday will be the first day of the three-day event.
