NEW HAVEN, Conn. - For the second straight season, Ryan Herpy of the Albertus Magnus College Men's ice hockey team was named as a nominee for the 2024 Hockey Humanitarian Award.
The award, in its 29th year, is presented annually to college hockey's finest citizen - a student-athlete who makes significant contributions to not only his or her team but to the community at-large through leadership in volunteerism.
Finalists for the 2024 Hockey Humanitarian Award will be announced in February and a winner will be announced on Friday, April 12 during the NCAA Men's Frozen Four weekend in Saint Paul, MN.
Herpy, a graduate defenseman from Chagrin Falls, Ohio began his volunteer journey in December 2019 when he and his teammates coordinated with the Yale New Haven Children's Hospital to deliver toys to kids staying in the hospital receiving treatment while drumming up local support for donations.
In 2021, Herpy volunteered at FISH of Greater New Haven. During his time, he organized several volunteer work sessions to help package groceries that were sent to local residents in New Haven that experienced food insecurity.
In November, 2022, Herpy and his teammates established the first ever charity game for the men's ice hockey team supporting the Wounded Warrior Project. Through community funding and online support, Herpy and the rest of the Falcons raised over $12,000.
Around the holiday season in 2023, Herpy and the team helped collect over 150 food items to deliver to the Centro San Jose Family Center.
This year, the team chose to dedicate a game in December 2023 to Do It For Daron (DIFD), which is an organization that funds resources supporting youth mental health. The organization encourages an open dialogue regarding youth mental health, promoting both American and Canadian resources, research towards youth mental health and education on the matter. The fundraising event through DIFD with help from local business and the online community raised $8,270.
Herpy is also a member of the executive board of the Albertus Magnus College Honors Program. He is also a senator in the Student Government Association.
