Student-athletes of the Albertus Magnus Department of Athletics registered 703 hours of community service from the beginning of the fall semester until the end of November as part of the College’s 1925 Hours of Community Service project.
The department set a goal to obtain 603 hours of the College’s 1925 and went above and beyond that milestone.
“It was great to see our student-athletes volunteering their time and efforts to help in neighborhoods and at non-profits in the New Haven area,” said Director of Athletics Jim Abromaitis. “I am appreciative of the spirit and team work which was exhibited by our athletes and coaches as they were able to find the time to help in the community despite their busy schedules of class, practice, and games.”
Members of the Albertus men’s basketball team as well as the men’s and women’s volleyball teams participated in Connecticut Special Olympic events in the area, while the Falcons’ women’s soccer team helped run the Southern Connecticut Conference (SCC) Unified Games at Amity Regional High School.
Members of the men’s soccer team, women’s lacrosse team, and tennis teams helped with a campus clean-up as select members of the college community helped clean-up on and around campus as part of St. Albert Week in mid-November. Athletes helped plant flower bulbs around the Athletic Center as well. Members of the baseball team helped at Hamden’s Out of the Darkness Suicide Prevention Walk on Oct. 6.
In addition to volunteering at local grade schools, the Albertus softball team participated in a Walk to End Lupus in West Haven and also volunteered at the East Haven Food Pantry. Both volleyball teams volunteered at the Connecticut Food Bank, while the women’s team raised funds and awareness for cancer with their Dig Pink event in October.
The Falcons’ women’s basketball team read to kids at a local school, while they helped at the Kensington Community Harvest Celebration. Both the men’s and women’s cross country teams participated in a charity dodge ball tournament in New Haven as well.
The Albertus men’s lacrosse team volunteered at many walks over the fall season, including the Cook-and-Care Walkathon, which was hosted by Albertus Magnus College. The team also volunteered at the Connecticut Food Pantry and the Connecticut Food Bank, to name a few.
Many of the teams plan to continue their volunteer and community service acts throughout the year but in part with the College’s 2013 goal, the Falcons’ athletic programs helped the school reach over 5,000 hours in community service efforts.
