Strong Pitching Helps Baseball Outlast Gordon on the Road

WENHAM, Mass. — Kevin Pascual (Norwalk, Conn.) stood tall on the mound through 8.2 innings of work and secured his first career win as the Albertus Magnus College baseball team bested Gordon College, 5-4, on Friday.

On the mound for Albertus, Pascual was a force to be reckoned with three straight immaculate innings in the first three frames and only allowed a walk and a hit in the fourth to keep Gordon scoreless.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • The contest went four scoreless innings until Anthony Abate (Naugatuck, Conn.) cut through the scoring drought with a single right center and allowed Anthony Acampora (North Haven, Conn.) to score in the top of the fifth inning. Acampora doubled along the right field line before landing on third off a ground out to the first baseman with Colin Telford (Branford, Conn.) at bat.
  • The hosts evened the score with a run scored at the bottom of the fifth frame.
  • Abate led off the seventh inning with a two-bagger out to right field then advanced to third base and eventually notched another Albertus' run off back-to-back passed balls.
  • Two batters later, Troy Piascik (East Haven, Conn.) capitalized off Gordon mistakes after drawing a walk, stealing second, securing third base off a wild pitch and capped off the opportunity with a run off another erratic throw to put the visitors up, 3-1.
  • In the ninth frame, Piascik padded the Falcons' lead off a triple to center field and brought Bobby Arent (Ridgefield, Conn.) back home after the senior doubled at the previous at-bat.
  • With only a single out on the board, Jason Sullivan (Meriden, Conn.) drilled a sacrifice fly to right center to drive Piascik back to the plate in the final inning.
  • The home team blasted a three-run home run out of right field to narrow the gap to within one but Nick Kownack (Schenectady, N.Y.) came in as relief for the final out with a ground out Abate at shortstop, and the senior's first career save.
