Three First-Period Goals Spur Men's Ice Hockey To Win Over Nazareth

PLATTSBURGH, N.Y. - The Albertus Magnus College men's ice hockey team scored three goals in the first period, leading to a 4-2 win over Nazareth at the 2024 Comfort Inn Complex Winter Classic on Friday afternoon on the campus of SUNY Plattsburgh.

Tim Manning (Concord, Ohio) had a goal and assist to lead the Falcons in points. Caden Pattison (Lake Stevens, Wash.) scored a goal, as did Sam Anderson (Calgary, Alberta) and Tyler Ignazzitto (Bath, Ontario).

The Falcons have now won three of their last four games.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • The Falcons got on the board 3:57 into the first period on a power play as a shot from Eric Chamandy (Montreal, Quebec) was deflected by Manning into the net to make it a 1-0 game.

  • At the 10:08 mark of the second, Anderson rifled a shot from the right faceoff circle over the glove of Raphael Provencher and into the net, popping up the goaltender's water bottle on top of the net.

  • Nazareth got on the board at 16:41 mark on a goal by Blake Frost who split two defenders to make it a one-goal game.

  • Albertus responded less than 90 seconds later as Pattison rebounded a shot from Kyle Dann (Windham, N.H.) in a scramble in front of the net for his fifth goal of the season.

  • The Falcons took a 3-1 lead into the first intermission and wasted little time taking full control of the game in the second period, scoring 12 seconds in. After the opening faceoff was controlled by Nazareth they turned the puck over to Ryan Herpy at center ice. Herpy backhanded a pass to Manning, who himself tapped a backhanded pass between the legs of a defender to Ignazzitto who had a wide open scoring opportunity which he cashed in to give the Falcons a big 4-1 lead.

  • Albertus goaltender Logan Bateman (Ottawa, Ontario) stopped all ten of the shots he faced in the second period.

  • Nazareth tacked on one more goal in the third Johnny Jackson scored on a power play. Bateman stopped ten more shots in the final period.

NOTEWORTHY

  • Ignazzitto has registered a point in the last four games in six of his last seven. He now has two goals on the season.
  • It was Manning's third multi-point game of the season.
  • Cameron Weitzman, who assisted on the goal by Anderson now has 35 assists in his career. He is three assists shy from tying for second all-time in program history.
  • Anderson has goals in three of his last four games and points in four straight games. 
  • The ten wins mark the third straight season the Falcons have won at least ten games.

 

UP NEXT

The Falcons will take on the host and No. 5 ranked SUNY Plattsburgh at 7 p.m. in the Comfort Inn Complex Winter Classic Championship game. SUNY Plattsburgh defeated Rivier, 4-1 in the other semifinal game.
