Men's Ice Hockey Drops To No. 5 Plattsburgh In Winter Classic Final

PLATTSBURGH, N.Y. - The Albertus Magnus College men's ice hockey team lost in the finals of the Comfort Inn Complex Winter Classic to No. 5 and host, SUNY Plattsburgh, 5-3 on Saturday evening.

Sam Anderson (Calgary, Alberta) scored two goals for the Falcons as Albertus tied the game in the first period before four straight goals from the Cardinals gave them a 5-1 advantage. 

JJ Berdal (Wausau, Wisc.) also added a goal.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • After a scoreless first 13 minutes, the final seven minutes of the first period ended in a barrage of goals as Colin Callanan put the Cardinals on the board with a goal at 13:09 in the first in a scrum in front of the net.

  • Not long after, Anderson got the Falcons on the board on a power play as he took a rebound off a shot from Caden Pattison (Lake Stevens, Wash.) and put home his eighth goal of the season at the 15:33 mark.

  • Just 67 seconds later Callanan scored his second goal of the period as he crashed into the net as he scored on a pass from Luk Jirousek.

  • The Cardinals took the 2-1 lead into the intermission and scored just 1:26 into the second period as Jirousek fired in a rebound in front of the net, making it a 3-1 game.

  • Adam Tretowicz added one more goal in the period to make it a 4-1 lead for the Cardinals. 

  • In the third, Plattsburgh got one more insurance goal from Thomas Maia as Jack Ring wrapped around the goal making a tight pass to Maia who put the puck home in an open net.

  • Albertus looked to make a comeback as Anderson took a pass from Charles Lavoie (Chicoutimi, Quebec) that went high off the glass and raced in for his ninth goal of the season at the 11:12 mark.

  • Berdal added his second goal of the season with under a minute left as he punched in a shot from the right faceoff circle for the final tally of the game.

NOTEWORTHY

  • Anderson now has 30 goals in his career, which is just one behind the program's all-time leader, teammate Cameron Weitzman, who has 31. It was also his second two-goal game of the season. He has a goal in his last three games.
  • It was the second all-time meeting between the two teams, as the series is tied, 1-1.
  • Pattison finished with two assists, his second two-point game of the season.
  • Lavoie has five assists in his last five games.
