Weitzman Scores Twice, Hicks Scores Game-Winner As Men's Ice Hockey Tops Rivier

NEW HAVEN, Conn. - Paden Hicks (Kansas City, Mo.) scored a game-winning goal with under three minutes left in the third period and Cameron Weitzman (Dollard-des-Ormeaux, Quebec) scored twice in his 100th career game as the Albertus Magnus College men's ice hockey team swept the season series against Rivier in a 5-3 win Tuesday evening at Ralph Walker Ice Rink.

It was the final home game of the season for the Falcons as they finished 8-3 at Ralph Walker this season.

Sam Anderson and Tyler Ignazzitto also added a goal for the Falcons.

Eight seniors and graduate students were honored before the game for senior day. Weitzman, Ryan Herpy (Chagrin Falls, OH.), Harley Michaels (Kirkland, Quebec), Spencer Silver (North Wales, Pa.), Gustav Muller (Hudiksvall, Sweden),  JJ Berdal (Wausau, Wi.), Logan Bateman (Ottawa, Ontario), Lucas Ehrlich (Stamford, Conn.).

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • The Raiders got on the board after a goal from Liam Hennessy on a power play at the 11:24 mark of the first period.
  • The Falcons were able to get on the board with a power play goal of their own as Anderson fed a pass to Weitzman who was standing by the right pipe behind the defense. Weitzman ripped the shot in from close distance to make it a 1-1 game going into the first intermission.
  • In the second period, Harley Michaels ripped a slap shot from just in front of the blue line that was deflected by Ignazzitto to give the Falcons its first lead of the game at the 6:31 mark. It was Ignazzitto's third goal of the season.
  • Later in the period, Weitzman returned the favor to Anderson as he skated around with the puck and fired a pass in front of the net that Anderson put in to give the Falcons a 3-1 lead. 
  • Rivier was able to get back to within one as Jack Tos scored on a rush by the Raiders off a pass from Hunter Phillips with four seconds left in the period.
  • The Raiders tied the game at the 11:07 mark of the third when Alfred Rotiroti snuck one past Logan Bateman (Ottawa, Ontario).
  • In the dramatic final minutes, JJ Berdal took a shot that was stopped by Rivier goaltender Will Augustine. Hicks skated in and punched the rebound in while falling to the ground to give the Falcons the 4-3 lead with just 2:24 left. 
  • Weitzman added a second goal on an empty net in the final minute after stealing the puck in the defensive zone and firing a shot down the ice.

  • WIth his two goals and an assist, Weitzman is the school's all-time leader in goals with 34, assists with 41 and points with 75.
  • Berdal has five points in his last five games.
  • Anderson now has 32 goals in his career. Second all-time in program history behind Weitzman.
