Falcons Earn Dominating 3-0 Win at Sarah Lawrence

Sophomore Chase Brinton (Bethany, Conn.) registered a match-high 14 kills to lead the Albertus Magnus men's volleyball team to a 3-0 (25-13, 25-8, 25-16) win over Sarah Lawrence in non-conference action on Tuesday night.

With the win, the Falcons improve to 4-0 on the year, while Sarah Lawrence drops to 0-6 overall.

Brinton registered a .435 hitting percentage as he recorded 14 kills in 23 attempts with only four hitting errors. The sophomore added one service ace and two digs in three sets played. Carlos Torres (Adjuntas, Puerto Rico) dished out a season-best 27 assists for the Falcons in two sets played, while freshman Dennis Waibel (Bethlehem, Conn.) added nine assists and two service aces.

Douglas DeSousa (Danbury, Conn.) also chipped in with 10 kills, two service aces and four digs, while Mike Clark (North Haven, Conn.) led the Falcons with nine digs. Freshman Ben Spilka (Redding, Conn.) also had a stellar night as he recorded five kills in seven tries for a .714 hitting percentage.  He tallied four kills in five attempts in the third set alone to help the Falcons cruise to a 25-16 final set victory.

Albertus opened the night with a 25-13 set win as the Falcons registered 15 kills with a .737 hitting percentage.  The Falcons opened the match with an 8-2 run before extending that lead to 18-7.  The Falcons eventually finished out the set with a 5-2 run after taking a 20-11 lead.

The Falcons cruised to a 25-8 second-set victory as DeSousa and Brinton combined for 10 of the Falcons' 15 kills in the frame. Albertus hit .522 in the set thanks to 15 kills in 23 tries. The Falcons once again opened with a commanding run, pushing its lead out to 10-3. After an additional 7-3 run to extend their lead to 17-6, the Falcons' forced Sarah Lawrence to call a time out. Out of the break, Albertus closed out the set on an 8-2 run thanks to four Falcon kills and three Sarah Lawrence hitting errors.

The Falcons opened the final set with a 5-0 run thanks to back-to-back kills from DeSousa to begin the set. Sarah Lawrence battled back to tie the match at 12 due to a Falcon hitting error but the Falcons never gave up the lead and took control of the set by jumping ahead 21-13. The Falcons went on to win the set 25-16 as Brinton closed out the match with his lone service ace.

Sarah Lawrence was led by Brent Terry with 10 assists and three digs, while Harrison Holmes registered seven of his team's 12 total kills.

Albertus will return to action on Saturday, Feb. 16 when the Falcons travel to Newbury for a non-conference tri-match featuring the Falcons, Nighthawks and the Daniel Webster Eagles. Albertus will take on Daniel Webster at 1:00 p.m. before facing Newbury for the second time this season at 3:00 p.m.
