Falcons Open GNAC Play with 3-0 Loss at Wentworth

The Albertus Magnus men's volleyball team dropped a 3-0 decision to Wentworth on Thursday night in the Falcons' 2015 Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) opener. With the loss, the Falcons fall to 1-2 on the year, while Wentworth improves to 5-1 overall.

Wentworth tallied 36 kills on the night and held the Falcons to just 14 en route to the GNAC victory. Despite the loss, the Falcons put up a valiant effort against a tough league opponent.  The final match score was 25-18, 25-17 and 25-16.

Glenn Johnson (Newington, Conn.) led Albertus with 10 kills for his third-straight match with double-digit kills. Justin Tharau (Burlington, Conn.) dished out 13 assists on the night as he added two service aces, four digs and two blocks.

Daniel Valmont (Orange, N.J.) and Joshua Turner (Trumbull, Conn.) both recorded two blocks as well.

Albertus opened the first set with a 3-0 lead before five unanswered points from Wentworth.  The Falcons battled back with a 4-1 run to take a 7-6 leave before Wentworth went on a hot streak to take a 17-12 lead.  After the Falcons' cut the lead to three at 21-18, Wentworth put together a rally and closed out the set with four straight points.

The second set began the same as the first as Albertus led 3-0.  The Falcons then pushed out to a 5-2 lead before back-and-forth play made the score tied at 15. Led by Jake Reed with 10 kills in 26 tries and Alex Potts with 13 kills in 18 attempts, Wentworth prevailed.

Wentworth hit and impressive .242 in the final set and recorded 13 kills en route to the set victory.

Ben Spilka (Redding, Conn.) added two kills and three digs for Albertus in the loss.

The Falcons will host Johnson & Wales (R.I.) on Sunday, Feb. 8 in their next contest. That match is scheduled for a noon-time start.
