Men's Volleyball Blanked by Rivier and Johnson & Wales in GNAC Play

Providence, R.I. – The Albertus Magnus College men's volleyball team lost a pair of Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) matches in a tri-match on the campus of Johnson & Wales on Saturday afternoon. The Falcons fell Rivier, 3-0, in the opener before dropping a 3-0 decision against the host Wildcats in the finale.

In their first match of the day, AMC fell, 25-12, 25-8 and 25-15 to the Raiders. As a team, the Falcons had 16 kills, 10 digs and three blocks. Senior outside hitter Justin Tharau (Burlington, Conn.) paced the Albertus Magnus attack with eight kills, while classmate Ben Spilka (Redding, Conn.) added six of his own. Freshman Jeremy Ortiz (Bridgeport, Conn.) did a good job of distributing the ball, recording 15 assists. Defensively, sophomore libero Matt Stoll (Shelton, Conn.) had a team-best five digs and junior middle hitter Joshua Turner (Trumbull, Conn.) registered two blocks.

The host Wildcats topped the Falcons, 25-16, 25-20 and 25-17, in the final contest of the day. As a team, AMC recorded 19 kills, 24 digs and two blocks. Tharau again led the charge for the Falcons with 10 kills to go along with a team-best eight digs on the defensive side of the ball. Turner was the other Albertus Magnus player to see some success at the net, registering seven kills. In the middle, Ortiz once again contributed 15 assists.

Albertus Magnus returns to action on Tuesday, March 29, with a home conference clash against Wentworth that gets underway at 7:00 pm.
