Women's Basketball Concludes Season with Home Loss to Mitchell

NEW HAVEN, Conn. - The Albertus Magnus women's basketball team closed out its shortened 2020-21 season with a heartbreaking home loss to the Mariners of Mitchell College, 60-57. Caitlyn Scott (White Plains, N.Y.) led the Falcons on offense, scoring 20 points with five rebounds and two assists.

HOW IT HAPPENED
Kyah Nowlin (Stamford, Conn.) got the game started with a long 3-point jumper to give the Falcons the early 3-0 lead. The Mariners responded with a short 4-0 burst to take the advantage before a Natasha Rivera (Ansonia, Conn.) free throw tied it four-all with a little over six minutes remaining in the first. The teams traded baskets until the two-minute mark of the first quarter when the Mariners pulled ahead 11-8 on a pair of made lay-ups by Chelsea Marcano.

The Mariners opened the second quarter hot, going on a 7-0 run on a pair of lay-ups and a swooshing three by Sam McKenna to take the 10-point lead, 18-8. A Rivera lay-up got the Falcons back on track, sparking a 9-2 run by the hosts to make it a three-point game, 20-17. A Mariners' lay-up was immediately erased by a Nowlin lay-up and a 3-pointer by Alexis Pendziwater (East Haven, Conn.) to tie it at 22-all with 3:26 remaining in the half. The Mariners finished the half strongly, going on a 4-0 run to send the teams into the half, with Albertus trailing 26-22.

The Mariners opened the second half on a short 4-2 spurt to make it a six-point game, 30-24. The Falcons responded with a 5-2 run to make it a three-point game, 32-29. A Nowlin trey tied it at 32-all with five-and-a-half minutes left in the third. The teams traded quick baskets to tie it at 34, with just under four minutes remaining in the quarter. The Falcons then began to pull away with a 7-2 run on a 3-pointer by Scott and a pair of lay-ups by Rivera. The Mariners' Amina Wiley netted a quick lay-up to make it a three-point game, 41-38, in favor of the Falcons, heading into the fourth quarter.

The Mariners burst out of the gate with a 5-0 run to take the two-point lead 43-41 a minute into the fourth quarter. A pair of Nowlin free throws tied it at 43-all with just under nine minutes remaining in regulation. The teams traded baskets until the six-minute mark, with Mitchell holding the one-point lead, 49-48. The teams continued trading baskets until Emma Pierson (Branford, Conn.) tied it at 54-all with just under four minutes remaining. The teams continued battling, dealing baskets until the last minute of the game before the Mariners' Le'Sandra Turner sank a short jumper to clinch the game, 60-57, for the visitors.
