Mariners Edge Falcons in Women's Tennis 6-3

The Albertus Magnus women's tennis team won No. 4 and No. 5 singles as well as No. 3 doubles en route to a 6-3 loss to Mitchell College on Tuesday afternoon in New London, Conn.

Chantal Simmons (East Harlem, N.Y.) made an incredible come back to defeat Jaime Topkin in No. 4 singles as she fell in the first set 6-1 before bouncing back and winning the next two sets 7-5, 10-8.

Malika Grant (Brooklyn, N.Y.) also came back after losing the first set (6-2) and defeated Marisa Haggett in the final two sets of her match, 7-6 (7-2) and 10-6.

In doubles' action, Gina D'Agostino (Hamden, Conn.) and Haley Manson (North Attleboro, Mass.) downed Mitchell's Jennifer Schmidt and Amanda Zullo in the number three spot by a score of 8-4.

With the win, Mitchell improves to 1-3 on the year, while Albertus Magnus moves to 0-4.

Mitchell's Mackenzie Flanagan defeated Albertus' Sandybell Anorga (Stamford, Conn.) in a pair of 6-0 sets in No. 1 singles before Amanda Resnick took a 6-0, 6-1 win over Na'Tasha Mesidor (Bridgeport, Conn.) in the second position.

Tykima Thompson (Queens Village, N.Y.) battled in No. 3 singles but fell to Julie Embley 6-2, 7-5. Rebecca Weinberger (New Haven, Conn.) dropped No. 5 singles by 6-4, 6-1 sets.

The Falcons will return to the courts this weekend as they will face two Great Northeast Athletic Conference opponents on back-to-back days. Albertus will travel to Saint Joseph College in West Hartford, Conn. on Saturday, Oct. 1 for a noon-time match-up before hosting Emerson on Sunday, Oct. 2 at 2:00 p.m.
