Women's Tennis Tops In-State Rival Mitchell, 6-3, in Season Opener

New London, Conn. – The Albertus Magnus College women's tennis team opened the 2015 season with a 6-3 road victory against in-state rival Mitchell on Wednesday afternoon in non-conference action at the Mack Tennis Courts.

The Falcons, who improved to 1-0 overall, won two of three doubles matches and then took the first four singles matches to secure the victory. Junior Zaida Velazco (Dominican Republic) and freshman Alicia Weaver (Bethel, Conn.) won at the top doubles spot, 8-3, while the tandem of freshman Izzy Sabino (Cheshire, Conn.) and sophomore Kelsea Wildman (Hamden, Conn.) teamed together for an 8-2 triumph at No. 2.

The quartet of Falcons also accounted for all four the squads points on the singles side as well.

The longest singles match of the day came between Velazco and Mitchell senior Samantha Ryan. The two battled to a split of the first two sets, with the former winning by a 10-8 final in a tiebreaker in lieu of a third set. All told, the match spanned nearly 3.5 hours.

The duo of Lehayla Cruz and Brittany Fuller were responsible for all three Mitchell points. The pair won by an 8-2 final at No. 3 doubles before picking up singles wins. Cruz was victorious at No. 5 by a 6-0, 6-1 final while Fuller captured her first career singles win at No. 6 via a 10-point tiebreaker.

Albertus returns to action this Saturday, September 12, with its home and conference opener against Johnson & Wales at 1:00 p.m.
