New Haven, Conn. – The Albertus Magnus College women's tennis team picked up its first home win of the season on Wednesday afternoon, topping visiting City College of New York, 6-3, in non-conference action at Celentano Courts. With the win, the Falcons improved to 2-2 overall, while the Beavers dropped their season opener to move to 0-1 on the year.
The Falcons had a strong day at the top of their lineup, with the top-four earning all six of the team's points.
Albertus got off to a quick start, taking two of three matches in doubles play to take an early, 2-1, edge. At No. 1, the duo of Zaida Velazco (Dominican Republic) and freshman Alicia Weaver (Bethel, Conn.) cruised to an 8-1 triumph. The tandem of freshman Izzy Sabino (Cheshire, Conn.) and sophomore Kelsea Wildman (Hamden, Conn.) won their match, 8-2, at No. 2.
In singles play, the Falcons won the top-four matches in straight sets to earn the victory. Velazco coasted to a win at No. 1, while Weaver, Sabino and Wildman all won their matches at No. 2, No. 3 and No. 4, respectively.
The Falcons return to action on Saturday, September 26 with a road non-conference clash at Vaughn at the United States Tennis Center.
