Paxton, Mass. – The Albertus Magnus College women's tennis team defeated host Anna Maria, 6-3, on Saturday afternoon in Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) action at the Paxton Sports Centre. With their first road conference win of the fall, the Falcons improve to 7-5 overall and 2-4 in league play, while the AmCats dropped to 3-9 on the year and 0-6 in GNAC matches.

The seven wins tie a program record and are the most for Albertus Magnus since 1992. The victory also helped the Falcons qualify for the GNAC Championship Tournament for the second time in program history with their first appearance coming in 2013.

The Falcons got off to a quick start, taking two of three in doubles play. At No. 2, the AMC tandem of freshman Izza Sabino (Cheshire, Conn.) and sophomore Kelsea Wildman (Hamden, Conn.) cruised to an 8-2 triumph. The win was the eighth of the year for the pair as they continued their impressive fall campaign. The other Falcon victory came from the Falcon duo of sophomore Shamain McAllister (Irvington, N.J.) and freshman Kiana Vega (Hamden, Conn.), who also cruised to an 8-2 win at No. 3.

In singles play, Albertus Magnus took each of the top-four matches in straight sets to seal the victory. At No. 1, junior Zaida Velazco (Dominian Republic) won her match, 6-3, 6-1, while freshman Alicia Weaver (Bethel, Conn.), Sabino and Wildman each won at No. 2, 3 and 4, respectively.

Albertus Magnus concludes the regular season tomorrow, October 18, with a non-conference road clash versus New Rochelle.
