It was a record-setting day for Albertus Magnus, as the Falcons set a new program record with their eighth victory of the fall. The team enters the post-season as the No. 5 seed in the upcoming Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) Championship Tournament and riding a two-match road winning streak. It will be the second appearance in the tournament in program history for Albertus Magnus.
The Falcons were dominant in doubles action, surrendering just one game en route to a sweep. The tandem of junior Zaida Velazco (Dominican Republic) and freshman Alicia Weaver (Bethel, Conn.) cruised to an 8-1 victory at No. 1. The duo of freshman Izzy Sabino (Cheshire, Conn.) and sophomore Kelsea Wildman (Hamden, Conn.) netted an 8-0 win at No. 2 as did the team of sophomore Shamain McAllister (Irvington, N.J.) and freshman Kiana Vega (Hamden, Conn.) at No. 3. The triumph for Sabino and Wildman was their ninth of the season, as they improved to an impressive 6-1 in non-conference play.
In singles play, Albertus cruised to victories in all six matches to earn their first shutout win of the year.
Albertus Magnus will travel to face in-state rival St. Joseph (Conn.) on Wednesday, October 21, in the opening round of the GNAC Championship. The Falcons will look avenge a 7-2 defeat at the hands of the Blue Jays earlier this season.
