West Hartford, Conn. – The Albertus Magnus College women's tennis team fell on the road to in-state foe St. Joseph, 8-1, on Wednesday afternoon at the USJ Athletic Complex in the first round of the Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) Tournament.
With the loss, the Falcons end the year with an 8-6 record, while the host Blue Jays improve to 8-6 and will face top-seed Simmons in the GNAC Semifinals this weekend.
Albertus Magnus got their point in singles action courtesy of a straight-set victory by freshman Alicia Weaver (Bethel, Conn.) at No. 2. Weaver was dominant in her final match of the year, scoring a 6-3, 6-3, triumph over Lucy Roberge to net her eighth win of the fall. Also in singles play, freshman Izzy Sabino (Cheshire, Conn.) dropped a 6-4, 7-5 thriller at No. 3. The Blue Jays pulled away, taking five of six matches to advance deeper into the post-season.
St. Joseph got off to a quick start, sweeping doubles play to take an early 3-0 edge. At No. 1, the Falcon duo of junior Zaida Velazco (Dominican Republic) and Weaver lost, 8-3. The AMC tandem of Sabino and sophomore Kelsea Wildman (Hamden, Conn.) also dropped their match, 8-3, at No. 2.
It was a record-setting season for the Falcons, as the squad set a new program high in wins and recorded a pair of conference victories.
