
Softball Splits Twin Bill at Albertus
NEW HAVEN, Conn. – The Mitchell College softball team split a GNAC doubleheader against Albertus Magnus College on Saturday afternoon at Shea Softball Complex.
The Mariners took the opening game by a 6-4 final to run their conference record to 7-0, before suffering their first GNAC setback with a 4-1 loss in game two.
The Mariners (11-13, 7-1 GNAC) will return to play on Sunday, April 21st, with a GNAC doubleheader at Regis College. The Falcons (15-16, 7-3 GNAC) return to play on Sunday, April 21st, with a twin bill at Saint Joseph's College (ME).
Game 1 – Mitchell 6, Albertus 4
The Mariners struck early in the opening game of the doubleheader, scoring in the top of the first inning when junior Brooke Whitmarsh (Portsmouth, R.I.) singled through the right side to drive home senior Hanna Lemke (East Haddam, Conn.). The Falcons answered with a run in the bottom half of the frame, but a three-run second inning pushed Mitchell ahead 4-1, with senior Jenna Bennett (Shelton, Conn.) and junior Emma LaBreck (Rollinsford, N.H.) each picking up RBI singles.
A two-run single off the bat of Isabelle Smith trimmed the Albertus deficit to one run in the bottom of the third, but Hanna Lemke came through with a two-run double down the left field line in the top of the fifth to add a pair of insurance runs.
Senior Katelyn Lipsky (Plantsville, Conn.) picked up the win, allowing four runs (three earned) across seven innings of work. Lipsky surrendered nine hits and six walks, but struck out nine.
Hannah Lemke went 2-5 at the plate with three RBI and a run scored. Emma LaBreck had three hits and one RBI, while junior Gemma Landry (Lewiston, ME) finished 2-5 with a run scored.
Albertus starting pitcher Annabelle Jabs gave up six runs and 11 hits across four and two third innings of work. Skylar Arent led the Falcons with a 3-3 day at the plate, adding one RBI, one run scored, and a walk. Hailey Laforte went 2-4 with an RBI and run scored.
Game 2 – Albertus 4, Mitchell 1
The Falcons opened the scoring in game two, plating two runs on an RBI groundout by Erin Molkenthin and an RBI single off the bat of Isabelle Smith.
Gemma Landry drove in a run in the top of the third, but the Falcons scored two in the fourth on a double by Julianna Petruzziello and a Gianna Carrano fielder's choice.
Gemma Landry went 1-2 with one RBI and one walk for Mitchell. Junior Emily Reynolds (Somers, Conn.) took the loss after giving up four runs in six innings.
Skylar Arent pitched a complete game for Albertus, allowing just four hits and one run.
