New Haven, Conn. - Freshman Katherin Martinez (Norwalk, Conn.) of the women's lacrosse team and sophomore Matt Warren (Wolcott, Conn.) of the baseball team have been named as the Albertus Magnus College Student-Athletes of the Week. Initiated in September, 2017, the 'Athlete of the Week' program recognizes one female and one male student-athlete each week for demonstrated excellence on the playing field.
Martinez, who was also named GNAC Corvias Rookie of the Week, tallied a team-best 14 points (10 goals, 4 assists) plus 10 ground balls and eight draw controls in a 2-2 week for the Falcons. The rookie opened her collegiate campaign posting a three-point performance (1G, 2A) in a loss to Mount Ida before recording a season-best six goals and two assists for eight points in the Falcons' 18-2 win over Bay Path. She concluded the week with a hat trick and a season-high five ground balls in the win over Newbury. Martinez also collected three caused turnovers and was 4-of-7 in free position shots.
Warren went 2-of-4 with two runs scored, a home run, a triple and six RBI as the Falcons split with Elms College on Sunday afternoon. The two-extra base hits gave him a 1.750 slugging percentage and he finished the day with a .571 on-base percentage.
The women's lacrosse team returns to Celentano Field on Tuesday, March 27 with a home non-conference game against Dean. The baseball team returns to the mound on Wednesday, March 28 with a non-conference doubleheader against Mitchell. First pitch is set for 4 pm at Rochford Field.
