Albertus Magnus College and New Haven Country Club Renew Innovative Partnership

New Haven, Conn., May 2, 2023 – With golf top of mind in the state between Albertus team competitions and the upcoming Travelers Championship, Albertus Magnus College is pleased to announce its renewed partnership with the New Haven Country Club (NHCC), located in Hamden, Connecticut, to continue to serve as the home course for the College's Men's Golf Team. The formal signing of the new four-year agreement was held Tuesday, May 2 at the NHCC.

"This ongoing partnership with NHCC will continue to provide outstanding practice, playing, and recruitment opportunities for our winning Men's Golf team and potentially adding a Women's team," said Albertus Head Golf Coach JR Fredette. "This innovative agreement is in the same spirit as our distinctive understandings with the City of New Haven and the Ralph Walker Skating Rink, the home of our men's and women's ice hockey teams, and the Town of Hamden and Rochford Field, the home of our baseball team.

"The New Haven Country Club is a valued partner for our athletics department," added Albertus Director of Athletics Mike Kobylanski. "This agreement provides us with continued flexibility that is needed to meet NCAA Division III practice and match scheduling demands. We are also grateful to our long-time City of New Haven partner, Alling Memorial Golf Club, where we will continue to utilize their facilities."

The New Haven Country Club is a private country club, founded in 1898. NHCC is one of the oldest golf courses in America and actually was formed on land that today includes the Albertus Magnus campus. In 1895, Yale Professor Theodore Woolsey and Justus Hotchkiss, a retired businessman, were introduced to the game of golf. They were able to rent land between Prospect Street and Winchester Avenue and from Division Street to Goodrich Street to create a nine-hole course that opened just before the Yale term began that fall, and Yale undergraduates immediately took to the game. The New Haven Golf Club was formed in 1896 and became very popular. To accommodate increased demand for play and to expand the course to 18 holes, NHCC purchased land in the Whitneyville area of neighboring Hamden, where the club remains today.
