Falcons Fall 4-3 in Ninth Inning at Springfield College

Springfield, MA - On a rainy cold day in Springfield, MA the Albertus Magnus College Baseball Program suffered a heartbreaking loss to Springfield College 4-3 in the ninth inning.  The Falcons received another outstanding starting pitching performance, this time from freshman righty Matt Finkenzeller (Wolcott, CT) who went 8 innings  giving up three runs (two earned) scaterring five hits.  The Falcons got on the board early after junior shortstop Kyle Calechman (North Haven, CT) singled and was sacrificed over to second by sophomore Rob Gambardella (North Haven, CT).  Senior second baseman Erik Suraci doubled in Calechman to give the Falcons the early 1-0 lead.  Springfield College responded with an unearned run in the bottom of the first to tie the game 1-1.  After Springfield took the lead 2-1 in the second inning, Suraci again doubled in a run, this time sophomore centerfielder Chris Dady (East Haven, CT) to tie the game 2-2.  The Falcons threatened in the top of the fifth inning when with the bases loaded, senior DH BJ Senna hit a sinking line drive into left field before Springfield made an outstanding catch to end the Albertus threat.  Springfield used a solo homerun to take the 3-2 lead in the bottom of the sixth inning.  The Falcons went in order until two outs in the top of the ninth inning and with the bases empty Calechman singled through the left side of the infield on the sixth pitch of the at bat to give the Falcons a base runner.  Calechman stole second base to give Albertus an opportunity to tie the game.  Gambardella then hit a base hit into left field to make the score 3-3 with Suraci coming to the plate.  Suraci already with three hits on the afternoon, drove a deep fly ball that was caught over the centerfielder's shoulder on the warning track to end the inning.  Sophomore righty Cullen Burnell (Litchfield, CT) was brought into the game to shut down Springfield College.  After hitting the first batter in the ninth, Head Coach Brian Leighton called a meeting at the mound to discuss the situation.  On a failed pitch out and pick off attempt, the runner advanced to scoring position.  Burnell got the next hitter to fly out to center field as the runner was able to advance to third base.  The next two hitters where intentionally walked to load the bases and set up the force out.  Springfield's next hitter lined a 2-0 pitch into right field to win the game 4-3.  The Falcons drop to 2-9, 0-0 GNAC on the season and play host to Worcester State on Wednesday at 3:30 PM.
