Three Falcons Earn GNAC All-Conference Honors

Anthony Pellegrino (Branford, Conn.), Kyle Calechman (North Haven, Conn.) and Malcolm Mendez (New York, N.Y.) have all been selected for 2012 GNAC All-Conference Team honors as announced by the league office on Sunday night.

Pellegrino was named a Second Team All-Conference selection, while both Calechman and Mendez earned Third Team honors.

As a freshman, Pellegrino finished the regular-season with six multiple-hit games for the Falcons and four multiple-RBI games as well. He batted. 269 in 24 regular-season games played with 18 hits along with 14 runs scored and four doubles.

As a designated hitter, Pellegrino also recorded a triple and a home run for the Falcons and registered 13 RBI as well. With an on-base percentage of .405, he walked 15 times and was 3-for-3 in stolen bases.

Calechman, who earned Third Team All-Conference honors back in 2009, led the Falcons in 32 regular-season games with a .361 batting average. He recorded 35 hits, 20 RBI and a team-best 34 runs scored on the season. He added eight doubles, a team-best tally, along with two triples and 19 walks.

In his final season with the Falcons, Calechman tallied three sacrifice flies and a .485 slugging percentage. He also tallied 16 stolen bases, 41 putouts and a .463 on-base percentage. Calechman had a stellar year at the plate for the Falcons as he tallied 10 multiple-hit games, four multiple-RBI games and led the Falcons with 47 total bases during regular-season play. He also led Albertus by batting .387 with runners in scoring position.

Mendez, one of the Falcons' three seniors, was also named to the Third Team as the All-Conference honor is the first of his career.

Mendez hit .313 for the Falcons in 29 games played during the regular season. He recorded 26 hits, 17 runs scored and a team-high 31 RBI. He walked nine times and was hit by a pitch 10 times. Mendez also recorded 122 putouts and 27 assists. He hit three home runs to lead the Falcons and tallied four doubles as well. Behind the plate, he threw out nine batters attempting to steal a base.

Freshman Mike Barillaro (Meriden, Conn.) was also recognized by the league as he was named to the 2012 GNAC Sportsmanship Team.

Anna Maria's Jeff Scafidi earned GNAC Player of the Year honors, while the AMCats' head coach Dave McNamara was tagged as the GNAC Coach of the Year. Saint Joseph's (Maine) Nic Lops earned Rookie of the Year honors, while teammate Chad Rafferty was named Pitcher of the Year to round out the major GNAC accolades.
