Rivier Defeats Falcons 6-5 in Baseball

Rivier edged the Albertus Magnus baseball team 6-5 in Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) play on Sunday afternoon in the second game of the league doubleheader.

With the loss, the Falcons fall to 9-13 on the year and 5-5 in GNAC play.  With the win, Rivier improved to 6-24 on the year and 2-6 in league action.

Patrick Dornfried (Berlin, Conn.) led the Falcons in the loss as he finished 2-for-4 with one RBI.

Brian Levchuk (Branford, Conn.) earned the loss as he fell to 0-4 as he allowed five runs on four hits and two walks.

After four innings, Rivier led 6-0 thanks to both John DiBenedetto and Mike Scanlon who combined for four hits and four RBI in the contest.

The Falcons used a five-run sixth inning to cut the Rivier lead to one at 6-5.

Robert Gambardella (North Haven, Conn.) led the charge in the sixth inning as he recorded a two-run double.  Sage Leonard (Northford, Conn.) followed with an RBI double to plate Gambardella from second. After a pitching change, Arber Mehmedi (Naugatuck, Conn.) was hit by a pitch before an RBI single by Justin Poirier (Meriden, Conn.) added to the Falcons' tally.  Dornfried also doubled to plate Mehmedi from third.

With the bases loaded, Jon Chotkowski came into the game out of the bullpen for the Raiders and got his team out of the inning. Chotkowski entered the game with one out before the bases were loaded on an error.  He then preceded to strikeout the next two batters to get out of the frame.

Steven Carlberg earned the victory as he allowed just one hit before the sixth inning.  Chotkowski earned his first career save for the Raiders.

The Falcons will host Saint Joseph's College of Maine on Monday, April 15 at West Haven High School.
