Baseball Holds Off Alfred State for Third Straight Win

Myrtle Beach, S.C. – The Albertus Magnus College baseball team scored its third victory on Wednesday afternoon, topping Alfred State, 8-5, in non-conference action at The Ripken Experience. The Falcons improved to 3-4 on the year with the triumph, while the Pioneers dropped to 0-9 with the setback.

AMC pounded 12 or more hits for the fourth straight contest to complete the three-game sweep of Alfred State.

On the bump, Albertus Magnus southpaw Tom Moore (East Haven, Conn.) tossed seven innings and scattered six hits to earn the win. Moore struck out eight batters without surrendering a walk and allowed four earned runs in his first appearance of the spring. Freshman hurler Derwin Nunez (Bridgeport, Conn.) worked the final two innings to record his first collegiate save. Nunez struck out two hitters, including No. 3 hitter Jose Martinez for the final out of the contest.

For the Pioneers, Conner Odonoghue was saddled with the loss after surrendering six runs (four earned) in six innings.

Albertus Magnus jumped on Odonoghue early, plating four runs in the top of the first. In the frame, senior catcher Ted Gravel (Morris, Conn.) and junior Aaron Macchia (Utica, N.Y.) both delivered RBI singles to center and sophomore designated hitter Eric Therrien (Bristol, Conn.) had a single to right that plated a pair.

Alfred State clawed back into the game with two runs in the first and one run in the home half of the second. In both stanzas, Moore would get out of trouble with a strikeout. After the second, Moore would hold the Pioneers without a hit until the seventh while retiring the side in order in the third and fifth.

The Falcons added insurance runs in the seventh and eighth, scoring two runs in each frame. In the bottom half of both stanza, Alfred State responded with one run.

In the eighth, freshman Mike Browne (New Fairfield, Conn.) hit an RBI double and classmate Dean Gullo (Northford, Conn.) added a RBI single to right two batters later.

At the dish, AMC was paced by Therrien with two hits and two RBIs, while Gravel, senior Justin Poirier (Meriden, Conn.) and Gullo all registered multi-hit games.

All three of the Albertus Magnus wins this spring have come against Alfred State.

Albertus Magnus returns to action on Thursday with a doubleheader against Principia College that gets underway at 10 am. The contests with the Panthers will mark the final ones of the spring break trip for the Falcons.
