Baseball Weekly Preview: Elms & Westfield State

Last Week: The Albertus Magnus College baseball team went 5-3 last week during spring break in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina. After dropping the first three contests of the trip, Albertus Magnus won its final five games to return to the Northeast with a 5-4 record on the season. The team is in the midst of a five-game winning streak for the first time since the 2013 season. The Falcons scored a pair of walk-off wins in the Palmetto State, highlighted by freshman Derwin Nunez delivering a game-winning double in the final tilt of the trip versus Principia.

This Week: Albertus Magnus will host Elms College in a non-conference midweek doubleheader before traveling to square off Westfield State in a doubleheader on Saturday. Prior to the contest against the Blazers, the athletic department will hold a special opening day ceremony at the newly renovated Rochford Field. Hamden mayor Curt Balzano Leng will be throwing out the ceremonial first pitch.

Series History: Tuesday's contest be the first-ever between the two schools on the diamond.

Scouting Elms: The Blazers enter the game riding a three-game winning streak. Last time out, Elms topped Fitchburg State, 13-5, at home. As a team, the Blazers have scored 100 runs, recorded 142 hits and have a batting average of .282. Their pitchers have a combined ERA of 3.26 and have struck out 99 batters this spring. Offensively, Tim Gelzinis paces the Blazer attack with a .433 batting average to go along with a team-high 26 hits, 15 runs scored and eight doubles. Jordan Zima is hitting .383 with a team-best 17 RBIs.

Series History: Westfield State leads the all-time series 12-4-1 with the last meeting between the two schools coming during the 2013 season. Albertus Magnus won that contest, 9-5. Prior to that, the Owls had won four in a row versus the Falcons.

Scouting Westfield State: The Owls have a full slate of games this week, taking the field three times before Saturday's tilt with AMC. Westfield State returns to the Northeast coming off an 18-0 thumping of Lesley University in their final game on their spring break trip to Florida. In 11 games, the team has scored 49 runs, recorded 101 hits and have a team batting average of .324. The Owls have a team ERA of 3.53 and have struck out 55 hitters in 79 innings of work. Danny DiMatteo paces the squad offensively with a team-best .488 batting average. DiMatteo also leads the team in hits (20), doubles (5), runs scored (10), slugging percentage (.732), on-base percentage (.500) and home runs (1). Nat Barnes and Connor Sheridan are both hitting over .350 for Westfield State.

Albertus Notes
- Senior infielder Justin Poirier hit .480 last week with 12 hits, 11 RBIs, six runs scored and three doubles as the Falcons went 5-3 during their spring break trip in South Carolina. Poirier recorded a team-high five multi-hit games, including back-to-back three-hit contests in a doubleheader sweep of Alfred State. In an 11-9 victory against Alfred State, he went 3-for-4 with a double and five RBIs. Poirier followed that up with three hits, including a triple, and three RBIs in the nightcap.
-  Nunez hit .333 with two RBIs, three doubles and four runs scored during the Falcons spring break trip to Myrtle Beach last week. After a slow start to the trip, he ended with back-to-back multi-hit games in a doubleheader sweep of Principia. In the opener against the Panthers, Nunez went 2-for-3 with a double and a run scored. In the finale he went 2-for-4 with two doubles, two runs scored and two RBIs. With one out in the bottom of the seventh he hit a double that brought the game-winning run charging home.
- Senior Steven Lockman is hitting over .400 for the Falcons this spring with three extra-base hits, six RBIs and six runs scored.
- In 66 innings of work, the Albertus Magnus College pitching staff has amassed a 9.95 ERA with 55 strikeouts. The Falcons have surrendered 15 unearned runs this spring.
- Defensively, the team has a fielding percentage of .943 and has committed 16 errors in nine games.
