Baseball Splits Twinbill vs. Norwich in GNAC Play

West Haven, Conn. – The Albertus Magnus College baseball team split a Great Northeast Athletic Conference doubleheader against Norwich University on Sunday afternoon at West Haven High School. The Falcons eked out a 5-4 walkoff win in game one while the Cadets earned a split with a 6-5 win in game two.

HOW IT HAPPENED

(T) 2nd Inning – The Cadets charged out to an early 2-0 lead in the top of the second inning as junior infielder Drew Caldwell knocked a one-out double. Fellow junior Eddie Gates then stepped to the plate and blasted a two-run home run for a 2-0 Norwich edge.

(B) 2nd Inning - The Falcons came back with two runs of their own in the bottom of the inning to knot the game 2-2. With one out, Matt Warren (Wolcott, Conn.) got things going with his first collegiate home run before Roberto Garcia (Bridgeport, Conn.) allowed the tying run to score.

(T) 3rd Inning – Norwich's Chris Dayos led off the inning with a single and came around to score on an RBI single by senior third baseman Matt Sirois for a 3-2 lead.

(B) 3rd Inning - Albertus Magnus responded with two runs in the bottom of the third to take a 4-2 edge. With one out and bases loaded, Adam Olszyk (Hamden, Conn.) allowed the two runs to scored as he doubled to the outfield. 

(T) 5th Inning - The Cadet bats tied the game in the top of the fifth as sophomore outfielder Kevin Lynch hit a one-out double then Sirois delivered a clutch, two-out RBI single to plate Lynch and tie the contest 4-4.

(B) 7th Inning - The Falcons won the game in the bottom of the seventh thanks to a walkoff solo homer by senior Andrew Scully (Stratford, Conn.) for a 5-4 final.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE

  • Scully had an impressive showing at the plate as the first basemen went 3-of-4 at the plate while also added two runs scored and a RBI to his stat line.
  • Besides Scully, seven different Falcons added a hit each to the Falcons total hit count.
  • Matt Sirois led the Cadets with a 2-of-4 performance at the plate as well as recorded a team-high two RBI.
  • Following today's win, Moore is now 1-1 on the mound.

HOW IT HAPPENED

(T) 1st Inning - The Cadets jumped out to an early 2-0 lead once again, using a two-out rally to do so. Kevin Lynch scored on a throwing error and freshman Eamon Smith roped an RBI triple that scored Eddie Gates.

(T) 2nd Inning - Norwich added two more runs in the top of the second on an RBI single by Kevin Lynch and a bases loaded walk drawn by Eddie Gates for a 4-0 lead.

(B) 2nd Inning - The Falcons rallied for five runs in the bottom of the second to take a 5-4 lead, but it would be their last offensive flourish. 

(T) 7th Inning - The Cadets trailed until the top of the seventh when Sirois delivered a one-out single. Eddie Gates and Eamon Smith then ripped back-to-back RBI doubles to give Norwich a late 6-5 edge.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE

  • Tyriq Harris led the offensive unit with three hits while Scully, Brandon Clark (Cheshire, Conn.) and Mike Browne (New Fairfield, Conn.) added two hits a piece.
  • Along with the two hits, Clark also recorded a team-high two RBI.
  • Albertus Magnus finished game two with a 11-of-32 performance at the plate while the Cadets went 10-of-32.



UP NEXT
The Falcons return to action next week against Mount St. Vincent, Suffolk and Saint Joseph's of Maine.
