Ray Askew (Hamden, Conn.) scored 12 points and pulled down nine rebounds to lead the Albertus Magnus men's basketball team over Anna Maria by a score of 71-51 on Saturday afternoon in Great Northeast Athletic Conference play. With his fourth rebound at the 10:07 mark of the first half, Askew became the Albertus Magnus all-time leader in rebounds with 1,037.
Askew entered the Saturday contest needing just three rebounds to tie the Albertus record of 1,036 set by former Falcon standout Jason Crockett '98. The senior surpassed Crockett's total in the first half of today's game and currently leads the program with 1,042. Askew is already the GNAC's all-time rebounding leader as he broke that record on Jan. 10.
The senior led the Falcons in today's victory with not only his 12 points but with his defending as well. Askew recorded three steals and seven defensive rebounds and he finished the day 3-of-6 from the floor and 6-of-9 from the free-throw line.
With the win, Albertus improves to an unblemished 9-0 record in the GNAC and move to 14-1 overall. Anna Maria falls to 6-9 on the year and 5-4 in the league as they picked up their third loss in four games.
Albertus began the afternoon with an 8-0 run in the opening four minutes before extending their lead to as much as 23 in the first half. The Falcons' largest lead of the game came with 9:58 left on the clock in the second half as they took a 26-point advantage.
Arshad Jackson (Hartford, Conn.) added eight points and five rebounds for the Falcons, while Zach Dugas (Monroe, Conn.) scored 12 points for the second time in as many games.
Darius Watson (New Britain, Conn.) tallied 13 points, while Spencer Smith (New Haven, Conn.) added seven points and six rebounds.
Askew's 12-point effort today also gives the senior 1,920 career points as he is 80 shy of the 2,000-point milestone. Tim Russell '05 is the only Falcon to score over 2,000 points as he held the all-time GNAC record of 2,234 points until Jan. 12, 2012, when Johnson & Wales' Lamonte Thomas surpassed his tally. Askew is also the GNAC's all-time leader in free-throw attempts as he is 610-of-900 in his career at the line.
The Falcons shot just 37.9-percent from the floor and were 3-of-21 from behind the arc, while Anna Maria shot just 36.4-percent, including a 26.7-percent showing in the first half. Albertus also out-rebounded the AMCats 47-35.
Up next for the Falcons will be Lasell at 8:00 p.m. on Tuesday, Jan. 24. Albertus has won nine-straight games after today's victory and will look for its 10th victory in conference play on Tuesday.
