Falcons Down Mitchell 99-89 to win Tip-Off Tournament

Darius Watson (New Britain, Conn.) and Eian Davis (Brooklyn, N.Y.) scored 21 and 27 points, respectively, to lead the Albertus Magnus men's basketball team to a 99-89 victory over Mitchell College on Saturday afternoon to win the 2013 Mitchell Tip-Off Tournament. Watson and Davis were named to the All-Tournament team, while Watson was named the tournament's Most Outstanding Player.

With the win, the Falcons improve to 2-0 on the year, while Mitchell moves to 1-1 overall.

The Falcons opened the contest with an 8-2 run before Mitchell battled back to take a 9-8 lead on a Michael Pellegrini layup.  Play went back and forth in the first half before a 6-2 run by the Falcons finished out the opening half of play. Albertus led 40-33 at the break.

During the second half of play, Watson led the way for the Falcons scoring 10 of his team's 12 points during a 12-5 run that gave Albertus a 74-58 advantage.  Later in the half, Victor Ljuljdjuraj (Yorktown Heights, N.Y.) scored 12 straight points for the Falcons giving his team an 86-71 lead with 2:07 on the clock.

Davis finished today's contest with 27 points and 11 assists, while shooting 8-of-15 from the floor and 10-of-11 from the charity stripe.  Ljuljdjuraj shot 8-of-14 from the field for 18 points, while he added 12 rebounds and five blocked shots.

Kyle Wiggins (Milford, Conn.) tallied 12 points on 4-of-9 shooting in 17 minutes.  Albertus shot 47.1% from the floor in the contest on 33-of-70 shooting, while the Falcons shot an impressive 27-of-30 from the free-throw line.  The Falcons' largest lead of the day of 17 points came with 5:43 left on the clock.

Mitchell had six players in double figures as Joshua Ford tallied 21 points and 16 rebounds.

Albertus will return to action on Thursday night when the Falcons head to Newbury College for a 6:00 p.m. contest.
