Shontaey Lovell Excels On and Off the Court for the Men's Basketball Team

New Haven, Conn. - Late during the 2015-16 men's basketball season, junior communication majors, Liz Nagy and Alexis Mack, produced a feature video on Falcon freshman standout Shontaey Lovell

During the month of February, less than one week away from the Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) Men's Basketball Tournament Mack sat down with Lovell and others around the program to talk about his impressive freshman campaign.

With love in the air, the men's team has displayed their passion for the game, as their record entering post-season play was 19-5 overall and the squad tied for second in the league with a 14-4 mark in conference play.

Contributing to the team's success throughout the winter was Lovell. In her sit down with the big man, Mack ponders whether it is a coincidence that he has "love" in his name?

Whether you believe it to be a coincidence or not, Lovell's love and passion for basketball saw him earn GNAC Rookie of the Week 12 times during the season as well as being tabbed as the GNAC Rookie of the Year.

As a result, February is not just the "Season of Love" but the "Season of Love-ll".

During the campaign, he lead the conference in double-doubles (17), field goal percentage (67.3 %), rebounding (11.9 boards per contest) and blocks (1.7 per game). He also ranked fifth in the league in scoring, netting over 17 points per game. During the year, he grabbed 15 or more rebounds in a game eight times, including pulling down a season-high 18 versus Anna Maria in early February. He scored 20 or more points in GNAC play six times this season. Lovell leads the country in field goal percentage, ranks third in the nation in double-doubles and is fifth in rebounding. Shontaey is the son of Stacia Lovell and is majoring in criminal justice.

Since his arrival on campus, the community here at Albertus Magnus College has admired and welcomed Lovell as a student-athlete.

Curious as to what makes Lovell the player he is today, he was interviewed by fellow student-athlete, Alexis Mack.
