Men's Basketball Falls on the Road to No. 25 Swarthmore

Swarthmore, N.J. - Despite three double-digit performances from junior Ryan Pittman (Stratford, Conn.), junior Mason Jones (Manchester, N.J.) and senior Jaqhawn Walters (Hartford, Conn.), the Albertus Magnus College men's basketball team fell in its season opener to No. 25 Swarthmore, 95-85, Saturday evening at Tarble Pavilion.

HOW IT HAPPENED
Over the first 10 minutes of play, Albertus Magnus trailed the hosts by double-digits until a short run and a three-pointer from Jones cut the Garnet lead to within two, 32-30. With 5:19 remaining in the first, sophomore Damian Grant (Waterbury, Conn.) gave the Falcons their first lead of the game, 33-32, followed by a made free throw. Albertus Magnus would remain in control and would hold a four-point lead, 48-44, heading into halftime.
 
Albertus Magnus carried its lead into the second and found themselves up by 10, 56-46 until the hosts tied the game, 62-62, at the 11:38 mark on a two made free throws from Ryan Ingram. From that point on, Swarthmore controlled the lead and the Falcons could only play catch-up, falling to the Garnets on the road in non-conference play.
 
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
  • Walters paced the Falcons offense with a team-high 21 points behind 9-of-19 shooting from the field and 3-of-4 shooting from the charity stripe.
  • Pittman started off his junior campaign scoring 19 points as well as added a team-high four assists.
  • Jones rounded out the double-digit scorers with 18 points, a team-high four steals, two assists and a block.
  • Swarthmore had five players score in double-figures, including a team-high 26 points from Cam Wiley.
  • The non-conference tilt saw four lead changes and three ties.
  • The Garnet recorded 19 turnovers while the Falcons posted 29 points off those turnovers.
  • Swarthmore out-rebounded Albertus Magnus 46-32.
  • Albertus Magnus - 41.6 percent (field), 20.0 percent (three-point), 85.0 percent (three throw)
  • Swarthmore - 50.8 percent (field), 38.9 percent (three-point), 83.9 percent (free throw)
  • Albertus Magnus held a 46-36 edge in points in the paint.

Albertus Magnus returns to action next week as the Falcons welcome WPI for a non-conference clash on Saturday, Nov. 25 at 3 p.m.
