Falcons Win Second Straight, Knocks off Norwich, 85-74

Northfield, Vt. - Behind four double-digit performances, including a team-high 24 points from junior Mason Jones (Manchester, N.J.) and senior Jaqhawn Walters (Hartford, Conn.), the Albertus Magnus College men's basketball team ousted Norwich University, 85-74, for its second GNAC win of the season.

HOW IT HAPPENED
Norwich came out of the gate hot, opening the game with the early 8-1 lead before a 7-0 run by Albertus Magnus tied the game, 8-all. The Cadets managed to regain the lead, 16-10, four minutes later until another run by the visitors, that included a pair of made free throws from Mason Jones (Manchester, N.J.), gave the Falcons their first lead of the game, 24-23, at the 5:54 mark.
 
Both teams traded baskets over the next minute or so before Albertus Magnus forced another tie and closed out the first with a six-point lead, 37-31, heading into halftime.
 
Albertus Magnus carried its momentum into the second as the Falcons pushed their lead to double-digits, 47-36, four minutes in on a made basket from Jaqhawn Walters (Hartford, Conn). Norwich managed to battle back to within seven, 57-50, seven minutes later before a short spurt gave the Falcons their largest lead of the game, 64-50.
 
With five minutes remaining, Norwich chipped away at the Falcons' lead to within seven, 68-61, but was unable to make a run as the Falcons secured the road win.

  • Albetus Magnus out rebounded Norwich 42-25 while the Cadets posted a 11-6 edge in points off turnovers.
  • Junior Ryan Pittman (Stratford, Conn.) and senior Amir Maddred (Camden, N.C.) rounded out the double-digit scorers with 18 and 10 points, respectively.
  • The Cadets' bench outscored the Falcons 34-6.
 
UP NEXT
Albertus Magnus returns to action next Saturday, Dec. 16 as the Falcons host No. 23 nationally-ranked New Jersey City. The non-conference showdown is set for a 3p.m. tip-off in New Haven. Norwich will conclude the 2017 with back-to-back games against Wiles and Colby-Sawyer.
