Men's Basketball Falls to Top-Seeded USJ in GNAC Title Game

WEST HARTFORD, Conn. - Despite a combined 30 points from seniors Tyreek Perkins (New Haven, Conn.) and Davon Warner (New Haven, Conn.), the second-seeded Albertus Magnus College men's basketball team suffered a 94-67 setback in the Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) Championship Game to the top-seeded Blue Jays of the University of Saint Joseph (CT) on Sunday afternoon inside the O'Connell Center.

Perkins led the Falcon attack with a 19-point performance, while teammate Warner rounded out the double-digit scorers with 11. The duo also earned recognition as Perkins and Warner were named to the GNAC All-Tournament Team.

KEY HIGHLIGHTS
First Half:

  • The Falcons' first four-points of the game came from Qualon Wilkes (Bridgeport, Conn.) behind a jump shot and layup.
  • Following two ties, USJ strung together a 6-0 run to increase its lead to six, 10-4, but a deep three from Warner brought the Falcons to within three, 10-7.
  • Albertus was held scoreless over the next two minutes until a three-point play from Kevin Crawford (Bridgeport, Conn.) at the 12:06 mark cut the deficit to nine, 19-10.
  • From there, USJ saw its lead grow to 18, 31-13, but the Falcons continued to battle as four straight points from Perkins and two from Dawkins trimmed the score to 12, 31-19.
  • Despite another 18-point lead from the Blue Jays at the 5:14 mark, Albertus charged right back with a 6-0 run following four points from Saikwon Williams (Norwalk, Conn.) and another two from Dawkins.
  • Shortly after, Albertus saw their 12-point deficit, 37-25, grow to as many as 19, 49-30, after the Blue Jays ended the half on a 12-5 run.
  • Perkins paced the Falcons in the first half with seven points.

Second Half:

  • USJ controlled the first-four minutes of the second, opening the stanza with a 6-3 run that extended its lead to 22, 55-33, heading into a media timeout.
  • The next five minutes was an offensive battle between the Falcons and Blue Jays as both teams traded baskets with the Blue Jays on top, 71-42, with 9:10 left on the clock.
  • USJ maintained its lead for the remainder of the contest to secure the 94-67 home win.
  • Perkins excelled for the Falcons in the second half, scoring a team-high 12 over the final 20 minutes.
  • Isaiah Lewis (New Haven, Conn.) finished the half with seven of his nine points.
