Men's Basketball Suffers Road Setback to No. 14 Keene State

KEENE, N.H. - The Albertus Magnus College men's basketball team suffered a hard-fought 82-71 road loss to nationally-ranked No. 14 Keene State College in non-conference action on Tuesday evening. 

Terry Dawkins (Bronx, N.Y.) and Jeyson Slade (Stamford, Conn.) led the Falcons offensively, as each put together a 12-point, six-rebound performance. For the fourth straight game, Justice Washington (Hamden, Conn.) led the defensive unit in blocks with two to go along with six points, eight rebounds, and a steal.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Albertus opened regulation with the quick 5-0 lead following a three-pointer from Jacqual Gertrude (Jersey City, N.J.) and two points from Justice Washington (Hamden, Conn.) just two minutes into play.
  • Shortly after, a 12-2 run, ignited by three straight free throws from Keene State's Mason Jean Baptiste, put the hosts ahead by five, 12-7.
  • Keene State continued to shine offensively, pushing their advantage with another 8-2 run over the next two minutes, increasing their lead to double-digits, 20-9. 
  • A hook shot from Davon Warner (New Haven, Conn.) at the 13:49 mark broke the Falcons' scoreless drought, 20-11, but another big run gave the hosts the largest lead of the half, 32-15, at the 8:53 mark. 
  • The game's momentum began to shift in favor of the Falcons, as a dunk from Assie ignited an explosive 10-3 run that brought the blue-and-white to within one, 37-36, with 1:45 left in the first.  
  • Despite the late rally, Albertus headed into the locker room trailing the Owls by four, 43-39. 
  • Keene State wasted no time increasing its lead to double-digits, 54-44, over the opening five minutes of play, but back-to-back baskets from Washington brought the deficit back down to eight, 56-48. 
  • Over the next two minutes, the Owls resumed their double-digit advantage over the Falcons and led by 16, 64-48, with 13:12 remaining. 
  • Albertus' offense caught its second wind, rallying together an impressive 16-6 run that cut the deficit to six, 70-64, heading into the final eight minutes of play.
  • Keene State didn't let the run deter them from pushing its lead back up to double-digits for a final time before securing the home win, 82-71.

  • Tazhon Daniels (New Haven, Conn.) finished with a season-high nine points.
