Men's Golf Finishes Ninth at the GNAC Championship

Gorham, Maine – The Albertus Magnus College men's golf team closed out the 2016 Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) Fall Championship by firing a program-record team score of 350 to finish in the ninth-place in the two-day event. The Falcons shot a 356 in the opening round to finish the Championship with an aggregate score of 706.

The nine-team, 36-hole event was hosted by Southern Maine and contested at the 6,555-yard, par-71 Gorham Country Club.

Saint Joseph's (Maine) won the team title with a combined score of 607. The Monks scored a three-shot victory over defending Champion Rhode Island College and the host Huskies. Worcester State and Johnson & Wales rounded out the top-five with scores of 622 and 629, respectively.

Senior Aaron Macchia (Utica, N.Y.) was the low scorer for the Falcons on both days, following up an opening round 79 with a 78 to earn a share of 17th. Macchia was one of four AMC student-athletes to lower their score on Sunday.

Junior southpaw Zach Schatz (East Haven, Conn.) ended the event with a two-day total of 169. Schatz began the tourney with an 82 and carded an 87 during the final round to enter the clubhouse in a tie for 37th-place.

In his first trip to the conference championship, junior Tom Crocco (Kings Park, N.Y.) finished in sole possesion of 43rd. Crocco shaved three strokes off his first round 95 on Sunday to shoot a 92.

Senior Tom Moore (East Haven, Conn.) and sophomore Elijah Thomas (New Haven, Conn.) rounded out the scorers for the team on the weekend. Moore shot a 100 in round one and closed with a seven-stroke improvement in the final round to finish in 44th, while Thomas landed in 45th.

Albertus Magnus ends its second-year in program history on a high note. The tournament concluded the collegiate careers of Macchia and Moore. Macchia leaves holding the school record for individual round score, two-day low score, most low individual medalist honors and most top-five's.
