Men’s Soccer Drops 4-1 Decision at Westfield State

The Albertus Magnus men's soccer team dropped a 4-1 decision at Westfield State on Wednesday afternoon in a non-conference match-up.

Westfield State's Josh Severns and Kyle Yelin both scored two goals to lift the Owls to their second victory of the season. With the loss, Albertus moves to 1-2 on the year.

Severns scored the first two goals for Westfield State, both coming in the opening half. After Yelin's goal extended the Owls' lead to 3-0 in the 71st minute, Albertus' Chris Long (West Haven, Conn.) scored his first goal of the year as he connected off of a Stephen Zapata (Hamden, Conn.) corner kick in the 79th minute. With the helper, Zapata improved his  team-leading assist tally on the year as he has now assisted on five of the six goals scored by the Falcons in 2011.

In the 89th minute, Yelin scored the Owls' fourth and final goal off of a penalty kick as Westfield State took a 4-1 advantage.

Donato Piroscafo (Naugatuck, Conn.) registered 13 saves on the afternoon as he faced 17 shots in net. In total, Westfield State outshot the Falcons 24-11. Westfield split time in net between two goalkeepers as Jeff Pepoli made four saves and shutout the Falcons in 75 minutes of work. Kris Carrington allowed one goal and stopped two shots in 15 minutes in net for the Owls.

The Falcons will travel to Boston, Mass. on Saturday, Sept. 10 to take on the 2010 defending GNAC Champion Suffolk Rams in a 3:30 p.m. contest.
