The Albertus Magnus men's soccer season ended on Sunday after an 8-0 loss to Brandeis in the ECAC Tournament Championship game. For the Judges, it was their second-straight ECAC title win.
Despite the loss in the finals, the 2011 men's soccer season will go down in history as one of the most successful seasons that the program has ever had. The Falcons achieved numerous accolades throughout the year, individually and as a team. With a 17-4-1 overall record to finish the 2011 season, the Falcons registered a program record in wins in a single season, won the Great Northeast Athletic Conference regular-season title and registered their first-ever ECAC Tournament win.
Albertus also went 10-0 in GNAC regular-season play, another first for the program.
Jamal Howard (West Haven, Conn.), who led the Falcons by connecting on two of their four shots on the afternoon, was named GNAC Player of the Year, named to the GNAC All-Tournament Team and earned First Team All-Conference honors. He finishes the year with 22 goals and six assists for 50 points. The senior broke school records in goals scored in a single season, career goals and career points in 2011 as well. Lindsley Barrett (Shelton, Conn.), who recorded his first career hat trick on Saturday in the Falcons' semifinal win over Castleton, was named the GNAC Rookie of the Year and had a solid freshman campaign for Albertus this season.
In today's championship contest, Brandeis proved to be one of the top teams in New England as the Judges outshot Albertus 23-4. With the win, the Judges improve to 15-5-1 on the year as they scored four goals in each half of the match-up.
Brandeis was led by Steve Keuchkarian with two goals on the afternoon, while Alexander Farr recorded one goal and two assists. The first goal scored by the Judges came in the eighth minute as Keuchkarian tallied his first of two goals in the contest.
Howard registered the first Albertus shot, missing just wide of target in the third minute. Barrett tried to get the Falcons on the board as well but his shot in the 38th minute was pulled in by Brandeis' goalkeeper Blake Minchoff.
Minchoff registered two saves on the afternoon, while Albertus' Donato Piroscafo (Naugatuck, Conn.) made 10 stops in net for the Falcons. The 8-0 loss marked just the third time all season that the Falcons were shutout.
