Long Nets Game-Winner in Falcons’ 3-1 Win at Mitchell

Chris Long (West Haven, Conn.) scored the game-winning goal in the 32nd minute to lift the Albertus Magnus men's soccer team to a 3-1 victory over Mitchell College in non-conference action on Wednesday. The win improves the Falcons' overall record to 8-1-1, while they are now unbeaten in their last seven contests.

Albertus scored first with a goal in the sixth minute as Nick Hamasian (Hamden, Conn.) redirected the ball off of a corner kick and into the back of the net to give the Falcons an early 1-0 lead. Stephen Zapata (Hamden, Conn.) earned the assist on the play, his sixth of the year.

Mitchell tied the contest at one with a goal in the 25th minute as Frank Williams' free kick soared past the hands of Albertus goalkeeper Donato Piroscafo (Naugatuck, Conn.).

In the 32nd minute of play, Long netted his first goal of the year with a header off of a free kick taken by Zapata. Stephen Zapata added a goal of his own in the 59th minute to finish the afternoon with four points. Zapata now has a team-high 19 points with six goals and seven assists.

Piroscafo allowed one goal and made one save in today's contest, while his record improves to 8-1-1 for the Falcons. Mitchell's Ramazan Sinani took the loss to fall to 2-2 on the year as he made eight saves in 90 minutes of play.

The Falcons finished the afternoon with a 21-6 shots advantage, while outshooting the Mariners 12-1 in the first half. Albertus also held a 7-2 advantage in corner kicks.

Albertus will host Norwich University in Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) play on Saturday in a 3:15 p.m. contest. The Falcons are 17-0 in regular-season GNAC matches dating back to Oct. 20, 2010.
