Stephen Zapata (Hamden, Conn.) scored the game-winning goal on a penalty kick in the 58th minute as the Albertus Magnus men's soccer team edged Western Connecticut State 1-0 in non-conference action on Wednesday. With the win, the Falcons move to 9-1-2 on the season as they remain unbeaten in their last nine contests.

Zapata's team-high seventh goal of the year puts him now at 21 points as he has also registered a team-best seven assists.

Donato Piroscafo (Naugatuck, Conn.) earned the shutout, the Falcons' seventh of the season, as he recorded four saves in net for Albertus. West Conn's Jack Holub made 11 stops for the Colonials (1-7-2) but allowed one goal which proved to be the game-winner.

Albertus controlled the tempo throughout the contest as they outshot the Colonials 23-9 on the afternoon, including a commanding 12-3 clip in the first half. The Falcons also held a 9-1 advantage on corner kicks with six in the first frame.

Zapata finished the match with a team-high nine shots, including five on goal, while Lindsley Barrett (Shelton, Conn.) tallied six. The Colonials had three different players with two shots as they registered just four of those shots on goal.

Entering today's game, the Falcons had not scored a goal at home since their 2-0 win over Saint Joseph's College (Maine) on Sept. 13 and were coming off back-to-back scoreless draws on their home field.

Albertus returns to action on Saturday, Oct. 6 as the Falcons travel to Providence, R.I. to take on Johnson & Wales in Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) action. Game time is scheduled for 3:00 p.m.
