Falcons Cruise Past Newbury 9-2 in Season Opener

The Albertus Magnus College men's soccer team cruised past visiting Newbury College 9-2 in the season opener this afternoon.

The Falcons wasted little time, scoring in the first minute of play as sophomore Alex Zapata's (Hamden, Conn.) pass found the foot of freshman Matt Stoll (Shelton, Conn.) who quickly buried his first collegiate goal to take the 1-0 lead.  Senior Lindsley Barrett (Shelton, Conn.) finished a ball off a defender from sophomore Alexis Garcia (West Haven, Conn.) just four minutes later to gain a 2-0 advantage.

Garcia would finish sophomore Matt Mueller's (Cheshire, Conn.) cross into the box in the ninth minute and as the offensive attack continued.  Albertus would manage two more goals in the first half as freshmen Justyn Broderick (Orange, Conn.) and Alberto Aguillon (Trumbull, Conn.) would both score their first collegiate goals to give the Falcons a 5-0 lead going into halftime.

Newbury would open the second half with a goal in the 54th minute off of the leg of Rodriguez Pierre (Somerville, Mass.) to put Newbury on the board making the score 5-1.  A defensive breakdown would allow another Newbury goal just two minutes later in the 56th minute by Ethan Forrest (East Bridgewater, Mass.) cutting the lead to 5-2.

Alex Zapata would respond in the 57th minute as Barrett would record his second assist of the game to put Albertus up 6-2.  Sophomore Earl McCoy (Hamden, Conn.) would score an impressive goal off his head from Zapata in the 63rd minute.  Zapata would add his second goal of the afternoon less than a minute later as Stoll delivered a beautiful through ball to his right foot before the goal.  Freshman Ritchy Jean Pierre (Fairfield, Conn.) would cap the scoring as freshman Mark Robinson (West Haven, Conn.) provided a nice pass to him in the 87th minute.

The Falcons scored nine goals on the day, with eight different players finding the back of the net.  Zapata scored two goals to go along with two assists while Barrett and Garcia both netted one goal and had two assists.

Albertus improves to 1-0, 0-0 in Great Northeast Athletic Conference play while Newbury drops to 0-2, 0-0 NAC play this season.  The Falcons return to action on Wednesday when they host Westfield State at 4:00 pm.  Newbury College plays host to Curry College on Wednesday.
