Weston, Mass. – The Albertus Magnus College men's soccer team opened the 2016 season with a 4-3 loss on the road versus Regis College on Thursday afternoon in non-conference action at Regis Stadium.

In the season opener for both squads, the Pride (1-0) avenged a 2-1 overtime setback versus the Falcons (0-1) last fall.

Albertus Magnus opened the scoring just over 10 minutes into the action as junior forward Justyn Broderick (Orange, Conn.) converted a header off a corner kick from freshman Brayan Lucero (East Haven, Conn.). The tally was the 10th of Broderick's career, while Lucero earned his first collegiate point with the helper.

Five minutes later, the hosts knotted the game at one courtesy of a strike from sophomore midfielder Litchie Barbosa. Following Barbosa's marker, the Pride would fire another shot on goal and have two corner kicks before senior forward Don Gomez broke through to give Regis a 2-1 edge nearly half through the opening stanza.

The Pride would stretch their lead to two at 3-1 later in the first half after senior forward Dillion Lanctot beat Albertus Magnus sophomore goalkeeper Joe Russo (North Haven, Conn.). To close out the first half, the Falcons threatened to cut into the deficit twice, but each time Regis netminder Manny Santiago turned aside the shots to keep the hosts in front heading into the break.

The Falcons struck first in the second half with senior midfielder Matt Mueller (Cheshire, Conn.) bringing the guests to within with a goal off a corner kick from Lucero. Mueller now has nine career goals and he has found the back of the net in three of his last four appearances for Albertus Magnus.

With a little over 20 minutes left in regulation, the Falcons tied the game at three as Broderick beat the man marking him thanks to a solid through ball and found a wide open Ritchy Jean Pierre (Fairfield, Conn.) at the penalty area. Jean Pierre collected the pass and fired a shot past the diving Santiago to level the score.

Regis took the lead for good in the 79th minute with freshman forward Ken Niyonzima picking the perfect time for his first collegiate goal. Niyonzima converted a pass from junior midfielder David Venegas inside the box. The 5-7 striker blasted one into the lower left-hand corner of the net past the outstretched arms of Russo.

In the cage, Russo made three saves in a losing effort for the Falcons. On the opposite end, Santiago stopped five shots to earn the victory.

Regis held a 15-10 advantage in shots and Albertus Magnus took four corners compared to just three for Regis.

Albertus Magnus returns to action on Saturday, September 3 with a home non-conference clash against regional foe Brooklyn College. The tilt between the Falcons and Bulldogs is the first-ever between the two and is slated to get underway at noon.
