New Haven, Conn. – After over 95 minutes of scoreless action, junior midfielder Justyn Broderick (Orange, Conn.) broke free and netted the game-winning goal as the Albertus Magnus College men's soccer team topped visiting Hunter, 1-0, in overtime on Monday evening at Celentano Field.
After a failed clear attempt with just under four minutes remaining in overtime, Albertus Magnus senior Alexis Garcia-Romero (West Haven, Conn.) collected the ball at midfield and played it to freshman Brayan Lucero (East Haven, Conn.). Lucero flicked the ball onto Broderick, who knifed in between two Hunter defenders and fired a shot past the sliding Hawks goalkeeper.
The tally was Broderick's third of the season, while Lucero picked up his conference-leading fourth assist of the campaign.
In the first-ever meeting between the Falcons (3-2) and the Hawks (1-3-1), both goalkeepers came to play.
Sophomore netminder Joe Russo (North Haven, Conn.) made three saves en route to his third victory of the fall. On the opposite end, junior Oliver Pedraga turned aside three shots in a losing effort. The clean sheet was the second of the season and the fourth of Russo's young career.
Albertus Magnus held a 17-11 advantage in shots and took seven corners compared to five for the guests.
The hosts threatened with a pair of scoring chances early in the contest with Broderick breaking in on Pedraga, but both of his shot attempts sailed wide of the net.
The best opportunities for the visitors came in the second half and were created by freshman midfielder Aiden Tucker. Tucker took a team-high four shots for Hunter. For the Falcons, Garcia-Romero, senior Earl McCoy (Hamden, Conn.), senior Ben Colter (Guilford, Conn.) and freshman Anjel Dominguez (Wallingford, Conn.) all played solid games on the backline.
Dating back to last season, the Falcons have won three straight overtime games. The last tie for AMC came in September of 2014.
Albertus Magnus returns to action on Saturday, September 17, with a road Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) clash with Lasell that is slated to begin at 1:00 pm. Last autumn, the Falcons took down the Lasers, 1-0, in overtime in the Elm City.
