Four Men's Soccer Players Earn All-GNAC Recognition

NEW HAVEN, Conn. - Kelvin Cortez (Meriden, Conn.), David Lucero (East Haven, Conn.) and Declan Ryan (Hamden, Conn.) of the Albertus Magnus College men's soccer team were named to the All-Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) teams while Kris Bocchio (Middletown, Conn.) was named to the All-Rookie team as the conference announced its 2023 All-Conference teams and major award winners.

Cortez was named to the first team after a standout season for the Falcons. He finished with 11 goals which was tied for second in the GNAC to go with seven assists and 29 points which tied for the GNAC lead. Cortez had had three multi-goal games on the season and four matches where he had at least four points.

In a 3-2 win at Lasell on October 3, Cortez registered five points with two goals and an assist. The Falcons rallied from a 2-0 deficit and Cortez scored the game-winner with a goal in the 75th minute. Against Saint Joseph (Me.), Cortez scored both goals in a 2-0 win over the Monks on October 14. Cortez also scored two goals in a 2-1 win at Regis.

This is the third time in his career Cortez has been named to an All-GNAC team. He was named to the third team in 2021 and the second team in 2022. Cortez is tied for ninth all-time in program history with 26 goals and tied for 11th with 66 points. Cortez is the first Falcon to make the first team since Salah Oumorou did in 2019.

Lucero was named to the second team, a season after winning the GNAC Rookie of the Year.  Lucero finished the season with a 9-3-4 record and had five clean sheets on the season, including shutouts against Saint Joseph (Me.), Elms and Colby-Sawyer.

Lucero was also fifth in the GNAC in goals against average at 1.09.

Ryan made the All-GNAC third team for the first time in his career. Ryan had one goal and an assist on the season. His lone goal came in a 1-1 tie against New England College. He also helped anchor a defense that had six shutouts on the season.

Bocchio played in 15 games and started 11 games during his freshman season. He racked up two goals to go with an assist. He scored his first career goal in a 4-2 win over Mitchell on September 14. He also notched a goal in a 4-0 non-conference win over Westfield State on September 27.

Also being honored was Elijah French (Tallahassee, Fla.), who was named to the All-Sportsmanship team for the Falcons.
