Falcons Fall to Simmons 10-1 in Five Innings

Despite an RBI double from Aimee Mirto (Hamden, Conn.), the Albertus Magnus softball team fell to Simmons College 10-1 in five innings in the Falcons' home opener on Friday night. The Sharks took the first game of the double header by the eight-run rule to improve to 1-0 in GNAC play.

The Falcons (3-4, 0-1 GNAC) gave up three runs in the top of the first inning on three Simmons' hits. Simmons added one run in the second and six in the fourth to take the commanding lead.

Albertus' lone run came in the second inning as Mirto doubled home Elaina Maio (West Haven, Conn.) from second.

Maio led off the frame with a base hit to left before crossing the plate for the Falcons to cut the Sharks' lead to three at 4-1. Simmons recorded eight hits in the ballgame, including four in the fourth inning as they posted six runs in that frame.

Simmons' Lauren Backhaus allowed just two Albertus hits in five innings of work as she struck out nine batters.

Melissa Manning (Milford, Conn.) fell to 1-2 on the hill for the Falcons as she gave up eight hits and 10 runs in tonight's loss. The sophomore also walked six batters and gave up a solo homerun to Simmons' Hannah Cunningham.

Cunningham finished the contest 3-for-4 with three runs scored and two RBI for Simmons.
